I'm getting iPhone 4 on Pay&Go. Whats the cheapest insurance to go with?

I'm in the UK and I'm staying on O2 and switching over my number and everything. i'm not going on contract because I feel like it rules my life, lol. I just want to know what the cheapest insurance is to go with as O2's is £15 a month which I refuse to pay.

But I've heard of people getting cheaper ones which I want as I dropped my last one got a cracked screen and I had to pay for it to get fixed myself.

I'm with the RBS as well and heard somewhere that they can cover insurance on the iPhone. Is this true? and how much?

Alternatively, What is the cheapest option to go with for insurance? I start uni in september and want one before I go. Thanks.

If only this forum had a search function for this question which is asked several times a week :)

Check if it is covered on your contents insurance, and check if it is covered when away from the home. It will only be few pounds extra.
  • Personally I got my insurance through a company I found on the main MSE site, I think it was Foneguard or somebody with a similar name.

I didn't bother renewing my insurance, but I think if I was to take out any sort of insurance now or in future I'd take the network providers insurance deal, it's rarely the cheapest, but you're not going to get left with a cash alternative that wont buy you a replacement phone when something goes wrong and they don't have stock and if something does go terribly wrong you've got your contract with them for leverage.
  • my iphone is covered under my house insurance at no extra cost, mine isnt an iphone 4 but i cant see why that would make any difference. i just rang my house insurance provider (directline) and they said its automatically covered, i would howevere have to pay a £100 excess if i claimed. but id rather do this IF i need to, rather than pay £12 (orange insurance fee) a month, JUST INCASE.

    :)
  • I do like the MSE solution of self insurance, rather than paying £x every month you pay £x into a savings account every month, if you need to "claim" you should have enough after a year or so, if not you've got money that would otherwise be lining somebody else's pockets and you can enjoy the interest.

With regards to the RBS insurance it is free for all royalties members, I was also looking into this Insurance (blackberry), I can't find the link on their website but I did download an abode document just last week from rbs site which give's all the details, seems strange that with having a bank account you can get this insurance free but o2 are charging £15 per month.
I can email you the document if you can't find it yourself on rbs website, just pm me.

I'm with RBS and my iPhone is covered. It's amazing the amount of people I know who don't realise that their bank can insure their phone for much cheaper.
Protection - register for Mobile Phone insurance and you're covered for one mobile phone and SIM card against accidental or malicious damage, loss and theft up to a value of £750.
    http://www.rbs.co.uk/personal/current-accounts/g1/extra-benefit-accounts/royalties.ashx

It's £6.95 per month for the Royalties account but the benefits are worth it, as long as you use them.
