  • Nice work, I'm going to challenge myself to see how long i can go without turning the heating on this autumn. Actually, that would be a good thread! How long can we last, how many jumpers can we layer!

Yeah I'll go for that challenge.

Mind you only because this terrace is warmer than our old flat. I put the insulation in myself so have no-one to blame if i'm shivering come dec.
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

Well I'm already challending myself to not turn on the heating till November the first! Which considering I have no double glazing (if fact glass that is so thin it is illegal to replace with same thickness), and dodgy rotting wooden frames which let in all sorts of cold air! Inspired though by my low bill, adn considering in the past i've always sat warm in summer gear in my house in Feb I really should start using jumpers!

Reakon we could get some kind of challenge going!

My doctor told me that if I really wanted to lose weight I should turn the heating off as I will burn off more energy trying to keep warm.
Seems that this idea could have more than just economic benefits:rolleyes:
i swear this is the only reason i don;t put on loads of weight in winter!! i can see my breath in the kitchen on a lot of mornings - but i can eat lots so i;m happy!! we;re trying to keep the heating off for as long as possible too...... although i;m not sure i can last until november!!

  • You could always just heat the living room, if you're all in there, saves heating the entire house when you only want one room to be warm. When your cooking the heating from the cooker will heat the kitchen.

  • Forgot to add, you could always add plastic sheeting to the inside of the frame, especially as it sounds like they need replacing once debt free anyway, it's a makeshift double glaze, and nowhere near as good as the real deal, but it does insulate a little more. You can get plastic type film from wilkos but I found that the thicker plastic worked best for me, and for what it costs, I found I made my money back in a fortnight (I was on token meter at the time). Alternatively good curtains add another layer.

Failing all that, my poor mother is having a bad menopause and could heat you home for free if you wish to PM me with your addresses and I'll send her round lol (hope she doesn't read this!)

  • well done you! :)
I've been trying to save electricity and gas for 'green' reasons and have started becoming obsessive about turning lights and the TV off if not being used, putting lids on pans on the stove, having showers not baths etc...and we are also in credit on our bill, in fact they overcharged as they overestimated our meter reading :T
Like you guys I'm going to try and resist heating too much at home to try and ensure the credit we have built up help through the winter...I also turn the radiators down if we aren't in a room and close its door.

The only problem we have is that the bedroom for some reason is arctic cold all year round...lots of extra blankets needed I think!

ooo good idea, could ring my mum for the same reason, however her hot flushes coincide with bad moods, think I'd prefer to be cold that in the same room as her when that happens!:rotfl: :rotfl:

Electirc blanket, they are great, I put mine on ten minutes before going to bed, peel off my jumpers, jump in warm as anything. Turn it off as soon as your in bed and you'll be asleep before your cold again! Just don't do what my brother did and fall asleep with it on the quick heating setting, he woke up the next morning half the size after sweating all night!:rotfl:

I have also turned off my boiler because i was starting to worry about not being able to afford the direct debit. Not sure what difference it has made yet but i'm sure i'll see some difference in my next bill (i hope so anyway!) i have Economy 10 but and going to ring around tomorrow to get a new supplier as got a letter today with my new charges.
I'm hoping not to turn my heating on till November, i certainly have loads of jumpers and cardi's ready for the start of winter.
