Barbeque Propane Butane Options

I've bought my first gas barbeque, it appears it'll run on butane or propane. So far I've noticed Calor and BP have bottles for sale. Can anyone offer advice on the best/cheapest options, who has the best refill network in each area of the country, problems, pitfalls etc..

Butane burns cleaner and hotter.........butane is the gas to use for BBQ's. The only advantage to Propane is that it will stil work in seriously cold tempratures whereas butane will not evaporate much below freezing. It should'nt be a problem though as not many people BBQ in frezzing temperatures. Only and issue to consider if camping in the cold.
As far as distribution and cost goes i wouldn't worry about either.....i've had the same bottle of gas in my BBQ for 3 years and there's still loads left.0 -
re propane butane it depends what your bbq jets are if it is a new type bbq it may have the new type bottle connection which runs on a green bottle with red top this is a butane propane mix and a normal butane bottle will not fit and propane are normally a screw thread connection. i would check to see what connection it is most retailers sell the bbq bottle0

The burning temperature difference between propane and butane is negligible.
Don't buy the green leisure gas bottles they are a rip off. If you have a butane regulator then just run it on butane, if you have a leisure gas regulator then buy a new propane or butane regulator. Pickup an empty bottle from your local tip so you don't get hit with a bottle charge.
Ring around for prices, cheapest will probably be a local independent supplier rather than the likes of Calor, Flogas and BP.0 -
Remember, not everyone uses the same-sized regulator. There are 2 sizes, so buy one of each. From memory the Range stocks them at under £5.00 eachNever Knowingly Understood.

thanks for the replies. I eventually opted for a 4.5Kg Butane bottle as it's lightest for taking the little barbecue around in the car to picnic spots. Calor took £30 deposit for the bottle, and they don't return £30 unless you return the bottle within 1-year, but it seems unlikely I'll use all the gas that quickly. The solution, gas bottles can be picked up for £5 on gumtree or from the local tip. Keep your bottle with the gas and return the £5 one with your receipt to get your £30 back.0
