Limited Edition Print Valuation

Hello there - not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but....

In clearing out the house Mrs Clanger and I have come across some limited edition prints which we no longer want and are going to sell (either on e-bay or somewhere else - any suggestions?). In terms of getting an idea of their value I've stuck the title into Google and found somewhere selling a copy.....for all except one which I can't find anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for how/where to get a valuation for a limited edition "fine art" aviation print?

All help gratefully received!

Cheers

    Limited to 999,999 a year?

Sell them on ebay either you get a good price or someone else gets a bargain.

    Try a dealer?

I had a del boy moment late last year and bought limited edition art prints at auction (strangely enough I got some aviation ones), I paid about £10 a box which worked out at about £1 a go, thought i was onto a winner. Then I discovered that it is difficult to find a courier that will insure glass fronted prints, then I discovered that at £1 a go I was probably robbed.

I have sold a few at car boot for between 50p-£2 a go, freecycled some and taken some to a charity shop. My friends were so used to be turning up with bulky items under my arm as a 'gift' that they used to run away in terror.

So, whilst i cannot offer any advice I do hope your sales turn out more succesful than mine.

  • Thanks for the replies...

The print is a limited edition - not of 999,999 per year but 850 in total. I've spoken to several dealers who, unfortunately, were only able to offer valuations of artists they represent (and this isn't one of them as - sadly - the artist is no longer with us). I have found one site that will do valuations - but at £20 a go (which is not a good way to find that your print is only worth £15!).

So - looks like back to the drawing board....

Depends where you are, but there are plenty of auction houses that do free valuation days. Capes Dunn in Manchester are one.

What have you discovered about the artist? Have you tried searching for similar sales of their work?

Well if you already have several prints from other artists but of a similar printrun and a similar subject then it's likely the price will be near the same. Can you tell us the name of the artist in case anyone recognises him ?

Another thing that affects prices of prints is how they are signed. If the signature and the xx/850 are in pencil on the border then that means that the artist has at least taken the time to individually sign each print, rather than having the details as part of the print which would make them less valuable. Look at the signature under a magnifying glass to make sure it isn't printed to look like pencil, a print will exhibit a regular grainy pattern or a series of dots.

    I assume you've searched on Ebay ?

You also say you've searched the title, it may be worth searching on the artists name, if you put say "artistname print" into your favourite search engine you may get other prints by the same artist which would then allow you to make a judgement as to value.
  • Hello again :)

The artist is Kenneth McDonough - the picture is entitled "Camel Flight". The signature is an actual signature (rather than a facimilie) as is the print number (679/850). I've searched for his work on the internet - but the only prints I can find are open edition and non-signed.

I called the Guild of Aviation Artists who weren't able to help me much as he is no longer a member of the guild (and is now deceased).

Thanks once again for all your help and advice, and if anyone wants to make me an offer......:rotfl:

    Cheers!
