Well, waste not want not is the motto round here, isn't it? :p (And I'd probably have done exactly the same in your place!)

  • hehe! Well done Fire Fox, I would have done the same thing with the wine. I might not have even waited until it defrosted...one giant grown-up ice pop!

I found a forum about FoodSaver bags and someone mentioned that they vacuum their jars, leaving space for air and put them in the freezer.

I have never heard of anyone freezing food in jars, does anyone else do this?

I dont think it's recommended as I think the glass can shatter? That's from memory though.

here's a previous thread asking the same thing - we will merge this later

We make tomato sauce in the summer with our tomatoes and have frozen it in glass jars, we just make sure we don't overfill the sauce, so leave room for the sauce to expand as it freezes, and they have always been fine.

I freeze stuff in glass jars.
Don't overfill & leave the jar lid off until fully frozen.

I make homemade soup and freeze in jars...works well so long as I leave about 1cm space at the top. Done this for years and never had any jars shatter as yet! I find using glass jars just great, at I just put the jar of soup in the microwave to heat up.

I regularly put small jars of HM lemon curd and peanut butter in the freezer, and have never had a problem with the jars shattering.

    Wow!

I didn't think I would get so many positive replies.

Thanks everyone, I must remember to save my jars from now on.

    ;)

Do the lids have to be metal or can I use plastic lids ie the Tesco Value peanut butter jars with plastic lids.

    Ta.

    Hi sb44,

I've put glass in the freezer before with no probems....except when I put a bottle of wine in, forgot about it and it exploded because the wine expanded. :o We have an existing thread on this that may help:

glass - can it go in the freezer?

I'll add your thread to it later to keep the replies together.
