Can anyone tell me if you can put glass in a freezer ?
Ive made so much jam that my husband said freeze them, I dont know how long the jam will last in the jam jars alone ?
I am hoping to give them as xmas presents and need them to last till next year.

I personally wouldn't!
Liquids expand when frozen, and this could crack the glass
others might give better advice1 -
You can freeze pyrex - I wouldn't freeze other glass as it will crack...April Grocery Challenge £81/£1201

Did you sterilize the jam jars before you filled them with jam? If so, they will last a good year in a cool, dark place. If, by chance, they do grow mould on the top, just scrape it off. They shouldn't though if you sterilised the jars and they are airtight (i.e. you have the greasproof circles on top of the jam, then the plastic circles held on with an elastic band, then a lid).0

The whole point of jam is to preserve the fruit:) That's why jams and jellies are called preserves - they're supposed to keep in the jar.0

We're still eating Raspberry jam I made in August 2003! If you seal it properly and store in a cool dark cupboard it'll keep for years, honest!Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!1

It's a moot point, but ice actually expands as it thaws."Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0 -

Generally things expand with heat and shrink as they cool so most things take up more room in a liquid state then a solid sate. However water is an exception and expands as it freezes into ice which is why ice is less dense than water and floats.
It isn't relevant to jam though because jam isn't mostly water. It is mainly sugar and acid which is why it will keep so long in a sealed jar in the cupboard.
I wouldn't generally expect glassware to crack in the freezer, though the stress caused by slight contraction could do it. On the other hand once you took it out of the freezer and it expanded again it might crack, if you put it under a hot tap it would probably be rather dramatic.0 -
ive got a frozen crumble in a pyrex dish in the freezer, so hopefully that will be ok. I didnt buy any special equipment for jame making , I just used the waxy inside of a cereal packet as papers and sterilised the jars.......maybe should get some elastic bands..... anyone know where to get them free ?0

Follow your Postie aroundthat's what I do. He'll probably be delighted to give you them, if he's not one who throws them on the floor

We're still eating crab apple jelly from 2001Can anyone beat that? I sterilise my jars in the oven and just use the original screw on lids - no papers
