White Vinegar and Stardrops!

I tried the stardrops and vinegar mix last week to clean the bathroom and it absolutely stunk of vinegar, my husband said it smelled like a chippie.
I used a third of each, stardrops, vinegar, water, is that the solution other members use?0 -
I use a 50/50 white vinegar/water solution for pretty much everything. Wiping work surfaces, cleaning windows and mirrors. Cleaning the sink, bath, toilet and tiles. Descaling the kettle. Squirted into a warm oven (hold your breath whilst doing this though) and left for 10/15 mins will bring it up lovely.
It leaves a vinegar smell for about 5 to 10 minutes and then it's gone.
I use it neat to get rid of any limescale round taps and in a jug to descale the shower head. Or if the oven needs more than a squirt then pop a bowlful of neat vinegar in it. Heat up the oven to it's highest temperature and leave over night. Wipe it over in the morning. A capful as fabric softner. Also for cleaning the DW.
The only time that I have had a faint lingering vinegar smell is if it's got on to material. Like today when I did the bedroom windows and managed to squirt a bit on the curtains.
Stardrops diluted for removing marks on the carpet, walls etc or general cleaning.
5 - 10 mls Stardrop in a spray bottle filled with water is enough usually. Stronger solution or neat if it's a tougher job.
Soda crystals for soaking the oven racks. Put in the bath cover with hot water and chuck in soda crystals. Leave for half an hour. The grease just slides off.
As you may have noticed I'm a complete convert. I don't have any other cleaning products in the house except for bleach.
If you think about it years ago they never had the products that are available now so why all of a sudden do we 'need' to buy all this expensive cleaning stuff.
Hope that helps a bit.0 -

Thanks.
I suppose it did only smell for a short while, I think I shall have to use it when I am in on my home, well before they come home from work/school.0 -

The 'general-purpose' spray mix, as formulated by Kethry, is one-third each of Stardrops, distilled malt (white) vinegar and water.
Stardrops is very concentrated, and the water also tones down the vinegar smell. It also makes them go further as well. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
How much vinegar do i use for fabric softener? Is it white i need? How do i make up a spray for using on my worktops? What do you use stardrops for? Many Thanks as trying to save from buying lots diff cleaning products.0

There is a stardrops thread on the forum - it is Brill I use it for everything
As for white vinegar as a softener I usually use one cap ful using an old fabric softener cap as a measure, but if you are in a hard water area use two capfuls HTHBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I have a garden spray style bottle which I fill with half and half vinegar and water and then add a good squirt or stardrops - it then gets used for pretty much all cleaning bar glass. windows and mirrors I usually use a microfibre cloth and a bit of neat vinegar if more grease removal is needed.

I use a spray bottle with 1/3 each vinegar, stardrops and water, but find the smell of the vinegar fills the room, even after dry. I love the smell, but doubt visitors willGC March Wk1 £28.72/£30 Wk2 £28.4/£29

I don't know if this is of any interest to anyone, but I was in W.H. Lung Chinese Supermarket yesterday (Liverpool near the docks) and they have a sort of wholesale/warehouse section at the back.
I noticed they do 5 litre tubs of white vinegar for just under £3.
I don't know if that's cheap, but it seemed it.
I thought it might be of use to some of you OS ers who use it for cleaning etc!
They also had 12.5 kilo bags of (table) salt for £3 - great if you use a lot (I got my mum one for her drive when it's icy)
