Does anyone know how I can get a pound sign?

My PC Keyboard had a pound sign over the number 3 like any other keyboard but when I hold down shift and 3 all I get is this #. Grrrr - it's so annoying. On Word I've assigned alt and 3 to the pound sign so I can do it on Word but on anything else it won't work.

I know you used to be able to do alt and something like 147 to get it but I only get "ô" that now.

Also my " are where my @ symbol is and vice versa!

Anyone any ideas how I can sort this out?

Thanks.

sorry can't really help with your £ query
keyboard layouts did change last year, it would be worth pressing every key with and without shift to see where it is.

signatures got all mixed up in the site move
    click on quick links above
then select edit signature to delete it :)

Last Question answered first, signatures got mixed up last week when the big changeover was done. Just go to ChatCP go up the page to just under the big green box, there you can edit the signature. As for the lack of a £ sign you will need to go into the control panel on your computer and then into regional and language settings, picture of a globe. Make sure it is set to English United Kingdom. Not sure if the Alt thing works in windows, it used to work on early computers something to do with ASCII character set.Hope this helps.

I've copied the following from another board:
Sounds like your keyboard has gone west! (USA). Check your Regional settings in Control Panel. If you are confirmed as English UK then your Office/Word installation has gone Stateside. I found the following in the Word help file.

    Automatically switch keyboard languages
If you are working with text in different languages, you can have Microsoft Word automatically detect the language in which the insertion point is placed, and switch to the correct keyboard language.

Note The different languages you're working with must be enabled through the Microsoft Office Language Settings tool. You must also make sure that the keyboard languages are installed through Microsoft Windows Control Panel.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab.
Select the Auto-Keyboard switching check box

To get the pound sign using ASCII in a word processor
Hold down the ALT key and then type 156

As regards the other bit, it sounds like the keyboard setup is duff, fixing it depends on the operating system you are using. If its XP then go to control panel, pick Regional and language options then make sure the UK keyboard is the default.

Also, try using Character Map for some less than usual keystrokes (it will also give you the Alt + numbers as a shortcut)

    © ® @ ½ ¼ ₤ € ™ ۩ <
    examples

    To find Character Map:
Start ---> All Programs ---> Accessories ---> System Tools ---> Character Map

Highlight the special character you'd like to use, click select, copy ... then paste it where you'd like it.
