HTC Desire newbie question

Read the thread on the £4400 monthly bill for a MSE member's Desire air-time contract.
Now, ask yourself the following simple question "Am I competent and organised enough to ensure that, when I go abroad, I can guarantee that I won't get a similar bill?" or ensure that you have loads of money in your current a/c !!!!
If the answer is "YES", then go ahead with your acquisition. If "NO", then either abandon the Desire - and most other smart phones - or take along a crappy old Nokia when you travel. That's what I did when I had a MDA T-Mobile smartphone.0 -

Nicely put! My answer would be: I'm competent to go through and choose a particular setting (a bit like flight mode or as maxtweenie suggested) and not mess up. But it would be a hassle if I have to make much more effort than that. I usually do travel with a second (or even third phone). It's most convenient to use my main phone whereever I am, changing SIMs as necessary. (I stick the roaming SIMs in the "older" phones. I do this because I'm not competent enough to remember to pick up a different phone to make a call depending what country I'm in! Plus convenience of phone books, recent texts received etc.)0 -

MENU, SETTINGS, WIRELESS AND NETWORKS, then take the tick out of MOBILE NETWORK. That will stop the phone connecting to the internet completely.
In my experience, the Data Roaming option is sufficient to cause the device not initiate a data connection when not in the Home Network.0 -
Took the plunge and am happy so far. My first impression is that because of its width, it's quite tiring to hold for long periods of time when talking. I have quite an ache in my hand after a one hour chat. Well that's the "snag" of having a nice big display, I suppose.
Thanks again for the helpful advice.0 -

If you are using for calls of that length, why not use a bluetooth headset, or even the corded one supplied, can't be comfortable using any phone for that long?I am a mortgage adviser. You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. since you use multiple sim cards, you will most likely lose the sms messages when changing simcards. there is an app called 'smsbackup' (i think thats what it is called) which backs up all your sms's to gmail automatically so you have all ur messages on gmail even if you change your simcards. you might have to use that option and open that app everytime when you change simcards though as i dont know if that app starts automatically when starting the phone with a new simcard.
i also dont know if you have to input the gmail settings etc while changing simcards as i havent done that myself. can you confirm whether this is needed please, since you have many simcards.
there are apps called locale and a few others that let you choose phone settings based on your location (gps / phone masts) and they automatically change the phone settings etc. this might be useful for a person like you so that it automatically shuts off roaming data etc based on your country you are in. although it might be wise to actually check whether the app has worked as stated otherwise you might get a huge bill! i havent needed to use such apps but do know they exist.
see www.htcapps.com for further details of various such apps and many other websites for app recommendations, just google top android apps etc.
what do you mean by will it play my old 78s? what are 78s?
oh btw becareful using bluetooth devices, there is a know issue of the desire getting screen unlocked while using bluetooth sets and receiving calls. then the unlocked screen is liable to be accidentally pressed and various apps using up data etc. check screen is locked after getting a call via bluetooth device.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
<what do you mean by will it play my old 78s? what are 78s?>
Before CDs there were records, the latter ones were made of vinyl I think and usually played at 33.33 rpm or 45rpm.
Prior to that there were 78's made of shellac (I think) which were very brittle and played at 78rpm.
I know all this but I am only 48!
Please don't ask what CDs are!!!;)0 -
Lol - I remember LP's and EP's (33rpm) Singles (45rpm) and 78's (78rpm..strangely enough!) and I'm only 39!! Lordy...how times have changed
