  • In regards to the overground and London Overground debate, thats all to do with terminology, but to answer the OP ...

Your best option is to get an Oyster Card (if you don't already have one), a 16-25 Railcard (again, if you don't have one already), and register the railcard on your Oyster.
If you use National Rail services on part of your journey into London, you will save 1/3 off the Adult Off-Peak Pay As You Go fare for that part.
Also by using your Oyster for the journey, you will get a 1/3 off the daily Oyster Off-Peak daily price cap, which for Zones 1-6 means a max of £5 per day.

I live in Bexley but I go to Greenwich Uni so I use my Oyster a lot to go into London for lectures and for going into Central, and I never go higher than about £4.50 so I know it makes a lot of difference.
  • On the TfL Tube Map, London Overground trains are the Orange line.

The ones operated by private companies (Southeastern, South West etct) are usually called Mainline services for clarity as the London Overground line has confused the situation somewhat.

I've noticed that Southeastern are attempting to re-brand their Zone 6 to Zone 1 services as 'Metro'. It won't catch on, it didn't the last time they tried it.

right - well that's my new thing of the day to have learnt - you can tell i'm south of the river as before the east london line makeover/conversion to overground, there weren't any 'overground' services that i'd ever used!

seen the metro signs too... can't see that working either!

If you are volunteering, the charity you work with I believe may be able to claim travel costs for you. Ask the person in charge at the charity you work at.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about. I'm doing a work placement in London travelling from zone 5 and pay £1,332 for the year (student price), whereas the yearly rate for adult is £1,904

Just have to sign up for a student season ticket.

He can't do this as his University does not participate in the 18+ Student Oyster scheme, and he can't apply through the Work Placement route as he is doing charity work just for the summer, not a full-time work placement
