It's a choice to purchase a present and I choose to do it once a year.

My dd has flourished in her school and they have really built up her confidence and I like to show a small token of thanks.:D

Jeez...for the moaning minnies - I was looking for helpful advice not comments on how I choose to run my household.;)

Clearly I was brought up with good manners which I have carried throughout life. If I wanted to 'buy just a card', I would bloody well buy 'just a card'.

DH is a primary teacher, and generally gets beer/wine/chocs/top gear stuff ( as he has his class believing that he is the stig). Normally the more quirky items are his favourites, but his best ever present was an Oxfam Unwrapped card which said that 500 (I think) pencils had been donated to an African school on his behalf. The student had written 'thought this would be nicer than another bottle of wine!' - he loved it!

The quirkier presents tend to be his favourites, or the beer lol.

I actually didn't know about the Oxfam thing until I asked for advice on here and I really like the idea...teacher knows I am grateful for school year (the bad parent that I am...jesus, he gets PAID dontcha know!!;)) and I get a warm fuzzy feeling doing my bit for disadvantaged kids.

My mum and dad were both teachers and they NEVER laughed or took the p!ss out of any of the presents they got. The cards all went up on our mantelpiece and some presents were kept. They usually got wine / chocs / smellies / boxes of biscuits / gift sets and they were ALL appreciated - more for the thought than anything else. I remember my dad keeping a handmade plate for ages (think they've still got it actually) - nothing was dismissed.

Nothing wrong with showing appreciation - most teachers I know go above and beyond the call of duty, often in the face of constantly challenging circumstances.

My brother is a teacher and appreciated any gift, character ties have been popular, novelty science things (being a science teacher), even a simple thing like a best teacher bear, mug etc. I Tunes voucher maybe to choose something for himself?

  • I've done the oxfam present thing a few times now and all the teachers seemed have been thrilled with it! One teacher actually came out of the class to hug me (which was mortifying!!!:o) She just said a polite "thank you" to all the boxes of chocs etc!

A few years ago I paid £5 to pay towards a classroom being built in Africa, just think how many kids buy for teachers at the end of term and compare a £5 donation to the cost of a standard box of chocs, pretty much the same! If all parents did this imagine how much money could be donated to charity! DD's school has approx 30 kids per class, 2 classes per year from reception to yr 6 that's over £2000 per school!
