Notebook for holidays

I am considering purchasing a cheap Notebook/Netbook to take with us on holiday, (easier/smaller/lighter to carry around than a lap-top) It will help keep a 13 year old occupied keeping him in touch with friends etc (out grown his DS) add photos to and check e-mails, it would also make it easier to check flight details, contact airlines etc.
Should I consider a second-hand one off, say, ebay rather than new, considering the use it is likely to get? And is a second-hand one a good idea anyway? not knowing the history/previous use etc?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Well the iPad is fun, light weight and smaller, etc. A netbook may not get used that much anyway is bigger and may get lost..?
A laptop is good for keeping a backup of your photos/editing. An iPad is good for reading books and playing games and viewing photos, you need to somehow transfer pics to iPad. I took the laptop and iPads on a cruise. The iPad was more useful.0 -

Then good luck with transferring your pictures from your camera to the iPad. You don't get them there "somehow"...
And what do you mean with "a netbook ... may get lost"? You can't lose an iPad? That's a nice feature.0 -

Seems totalsolutions took their eye off the ball on this one. How much is an iPad?0 -
I would forget about the iPad, over priced (£600!!) and does no more than an iPhone apart from it doesnt have a phone built in!!! No flash video support, No USB ports which means so transferring data to and from it will be difficult. Also, you need to buy overpriced apps to use it..... bringing the cost of your iPad much higher!!!
I would personally go for a small netbook, 10.1" screen, lightweight, usb ports and with the thousands and thousands of free software available you will have everything you need without paying out any more. You can pick up a decent one for around £250.
I recommend the Samsung N130.. decent build quality, decent size and decent battery and some good deals. I sell a lot of these at my shop and not had one returned yet! Asus Aeee machines are also very good and a bit cheaper at around £220.
I would go for one with Windows 7 Starter installed.
If you want help or advice then let me know.

This Samsung represents good value or you can hang on for one of these in a suitable colour to become available.
Don't be concerned about the 'refurbished' tag. Will look and perform as if new.0 -
Dell Latitude D410. When I have them in, I sell them complete with docking station for £99. Pentium M, 12" screen, Wifi, Bluetooth, 1GB RAM, varying hard drive sizes. Fast enough for Facebook etc. HP NC4200 is also a good alternative.
Far better to take something that you don't need to worry about being lost, broken or confiscated by Immigration.0 -

Something you need to share with us?
Also, what about the guarantee period?0 -
