I have just found an old bill from 18/02/09 and the Actual read was 1468 my read this year was 6420 in March. That means in the last year ive used 4952! 77% of the 3 year gas bill!
    Yes those figures are horrendous.
4952 metric units equals 55462kwh. The average usage for a property with gas Ch is just over 20000kwh per year.
Something is wrong with the meter or your figures.

OK, going by the bill you posted, on 24 feb 2010 reading was 6133, at end of june your reading was 6862, 729 units = 8164 kwh. For just over 4 months use including some winter that is quite normal.

Now the reading on your bill of feb 09 of 1468 and the reading of 6133 on 24 feb 10 do not add up. That is where the problem is , something happened between those dates, any ideas?

Just to add that it appears your meter is working OK now so it would be pointless getting them out to check it, and expensive.

Thank you ever so much for your help on this. Ive had more info back from them, and it shows that From Feb 09 to Mar 2010 our usage was supposidly 3 times the amount. Here are some readings in order:

    August 07 - 0000

    3 October 07 - 216A

    21st Nov 07 - 389A

    25th Jan 08 - 1055

    13 months used 413

    18th Feb 09 - 1468A

    13 months used 4952

    Mar 2010 - 6420

491 difference, despite no heating being on since March. Infact the last reading was on the day we switched it off and it has only been on for a couple of hours one evening since then.

    July 2010 - 6911

Nothing has happened this last year that would cause that, we had a worse winter, but we didnt have the heating on alot more than normal. Something just doesnt add up, but I really dont know what.

    Hi snoopy
Well 491 units equals about 5500kwh, that is in 3 or 4 months. May be high may not be, depending on what else uses gas. Do you cook with gas, especially the oven. What about hot water? A reading like this would not cause the massive increase between Feb 09 and March 10.

Do you have any more bills /readings between Feb 09 and March 10? They might pinpoint when the trouble started.

Can you read your meter daily at the same time for a week, that may give us a clue.

    Hi

We cook with gas and hot water is gas also.

Ill do a weeks worth of readings from tonight to check. I cant think of anything that may have caused the surge at all.

That may be normal usage then. as i said before, this usage would not cause your huge bill between feb 09 and march 10. But at a loss to say what could have caused it.
Any more bills for that period.
  • I'm changing to use Scottish Power for gas and electricity. So, reasonably, they need meter readings. I sent them back in response to the first request but have since received two more emails. If you try and give the readings again they web site says they're not needed. Is this the inefficiency I can expect from Scottish Power?

Email will be posted to the moneysavingexpert 'Gas and Electricity' forum.

    Hi snoopjiggyjigg

There has been a large difference in the gas you have used since your new meter was installed in August. Have a look at the consumption table below based on the meter readings you have updated. This might identify the potential cause:

    Reading date----Type
    Reading
    No. of Days
    Advance Daily
    Average Usage (kWh)
    01/08/2007
    Start Reading

    25/01/2008

    17/02/2009

    26/03/2010
    Customer
    6420
    402
    4952
    137.87

Did you check the meter reading taken on 17/02/09 (1468). Do you have any recorded meter readings around that time to check if the 1468 reading was correct? If all these readings are accurate, then your gas consumption between 2009 and 2010 was much more than your average consumption between 2008 and 2009.

I appreciate that we had an exceptionally cold winter this year, but this difference is not caused by using just a little more heating.

The other possibility, if there has been no major change to your gas consumption, is that the meter reading taken on 17/02/09 has been misread or keyed into the system incorrectly. Have a look at the consumption table now if we only look at the start reading and the last reading:

    Reading date
    Type
    Reading
    No. of Days
    AdvanceDaily
    Average Usage (kWh)
    01/08/2007

    6420
    968
    6420
    74.23

Between August 2007 and March 2010 you have averaged 74.23 kWh per day. Thats around 27094 kWh per year. This is not an overly excessive amount for a 3 bedroomed semi.

P.S. You have included your gas meter serial number in your copy invoice which means that I can locate your account details. I would recommend removing the meter serial number if you intend to post a copy of your statements online.

Let me know if you want me to investigate your details further and I will happy to help.

    Kind Regards

Thanks for this Colin. Since posting this a lady named Anne has really taken control of this from Scottish Power and has been superb. I sent her an email of thanks as its rare that you get that kind of customer service nowadays.

She has agreed to some great stuff, so hopefully this will help going forward.

Is still intend to get readings for 7 days.

Thank you all for your help with this.
