The idea of sub-moderators was suggested some time ago. 'Normal' users who had the powers to remove blatant spam posts.
Martin ultimately carries the can for what is published on his site (despite the limited immunity he was been told he has from his legal advisors about content he is unaware of)

For that reason, he employs those with responsibility for deciding on what is allowed to remain or is removed from the site; he would not have sufficient control over unpaid volunteers and I don't think he'll ever change away from that if for no other reason than his insurance requirements.

You can't give a user access rights to remove a certain type/content of post; they either have full access to remove a post or they have none.

... If possible lower threshold for new posts under certain post count so spam can remove there posts and keep same for old posters assuming it is possible

The problem is that spammers will get to whatever threshold of post count is required to overcome whatever limits are put in place.

There are a number of spammers who currently do this to post an active URL.

On the other side, reducing the number of hits required to censor a post will lay into the hands of the cliques or users with multiple accounts who will attack new posters en masse to remove their posts. Martin wishes to welcome (genuine) new users to his site. If posts they make suddenly disappear, new users probably won't stay around for long. Also what happens if another user )perhaps with a higher post count) quotes what is considered to be spam? At the moment, the FT can remove the quoted text but leave the actual post content.

The spam-in-a-thread is getting annoying. There are some simple measures that could be done...

    1) When somebody posts compare it with their previous posts. If the last few posts are identical then it is spam and should be deleted and their posting privilages suspended until MSEs can check.

    2) An alternative to the above is just to look at how often they have posted. If a new member has posted lots of times in a minute it should flag them as potential spammers without the need to wait for somebody to send an abuse email.

    3) While the Tiny url shortner has been blocked others still work such as canurl.com - block all the url shortening sites.

    4) With bulk spammers I suspect people may not have reported them thinking that somebody else will. Other times I am sure MSE is flooded. The Abuse button could be improved to allow a person (not just one post) to be flagged as a spammer and be greyed out if somebody else has already done it.

I just clicked the abuse button and it asks me which email client I want to use, Outlook, Yahoo or Google. Works fine for me.

Abuse does work with gmail in google chrome, not entirely sure how i got it working though, it was a bit of a pain to find a solution. I believe i have an add-in installed that redirects all the mailo links

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

The system seemed to work fine for me.

I saw a dodgy looking post so I clicked on SPAM at the top of the page.

I then added a post to let others know I'd reported it.

Next time I visited the forums the reported post had been removed along with all others by that user. The rest of the thread remained.

Can't ask for better than that.

The spam button at the top of the thread is, as it says when you hover over it, to report a thread as spam. If enough people do the same, the whole thread is removed.

To report a particular post, you need to use the abuse button and explain briefly why you are reporting the post. Your alert will then be reviewed and any appropriate action taken by the Forum Team. It was probably because someone else reported the post/user that resulted in the individual post being removed.

This has changed for me. When I clicked the abuse triangle previously, it opened up the Outlook email window. I don't use Outlook so always had to go to my Hotmail email and then write and send abuse an email from there, with a link to the offending post.. It was a faff and sometimes I just didn't have time/couldn't be bothered tbh.

I've just tried the triangle again this morning and a window has opened with my name and correct hotmail email address with a little section in which to write about the problem.

I don't know when this changed, it definitely did not work like this for me before, otherwise I wouldn't have complained about it. It's a lot easier now. :D

*goes off to find people to report* ;)
