Changing to Broadband

I have had Tesco dial up Internet for the past 3 years and up until now it has always been enough. Now however I am going to get Broadband.

I have narrowed it to 4 providers. They are Virgin, Wannado/orange, BT and Madasafish. All have said I can get broadband depending on a check though they differ slightly on the speed they say I can get. they all have different download limits per month though. BT and Madasafish have a six month cheaper rate resepectively £9.99 and £11.99 per month then rising to £17.99 per month whereas the other two are for a regular £14.99 per month. I am not going to go to Tesco broadband because I have had terrible problems with getting them to fix a connection problem this week, plus they are charging £17.99 per month.

I would be grateful if fellow MSE'rs could advise me on which is the best provider, and also although I have tried to read all the small print do any of these providers tie you in to a 12 month contract.

many thanks

samsyerman

This will be an interesting thread to follow. There are those who say " you only get what you pay for", and there are those who are enjoying really low cost usage. There are those of us who have experienced no problems at £10 per month, then experienced months of no connection when the company went...............well that dosen't matter. Were I in your shoes, I'd be studing this site information, along with https://www.ispreview.co.uk and https://www.adsl.co.uk to mention a few. I'd consider length of contracts, monthly fee, technical helpline charges, users comments regarding all aspects their usage of the company you are interested in. Speed etc wouldn't bother me, because I've noted from reading boards that there is always someone saying their speed isn't quite what they'd signed up for, so I don't get on that band wagon. Keep us posted what you eventually decide on.

The forums on http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/ are a good way of getting existing user's views. Although obviously those with problems are more likely to post than those whose connection is working fine.

Usually the 12 month contract term is for those offering "free" connection since the ISP is absorbing the BT wholesale connection fee.

I would advise you to try newnet.co.uk I changed to them from wannadoo / orange after they messed up my move to a new address. Wannadoo were ok so long as you didn’t have to call support. They are useless at trying to resolve problems and most problems I had with the service I had to solve myself. The move i was told would take two weeks, called after a week to check all was OK they told me it was going fine. After the two weeks called again they said it hadn't been initialised correctly and would have to start the whole two week process again! That is when I found newnet on adsl guide web site.

Newnet.co.uk charge 11.99 flat fee and give you the highest possible access speed in your area, plus there is no 12 month contract, only a months notice when you wish to cancel the service. This is why I took it in the first place, but their support has also proven to be excellent. When there was a problem on my BT line recently they called me to tell me they had spotted the fault and were logging it with BT, and then called me everyday to give me an update. Now that would NEVER happen with any of the top 5 providers. There is a set up fee but is only about £30 - £40 comapred to £60+ with the top 5.
  • Hi Samsyerman,

If you're interested in the Madasafish offer of MAX Broadband (5GB) you can use the promotion code CHEAPER when you sign up, this will give you MAX Broadband at £10.99 a month for the first six months followed by £16.99 a month thereafter.

Also, if you have any specific questions regarding our services, please PM me and I'll be happy to help.

    Kind regards,
    Samara
