Just lost a sale cos seller refused Paypal...

Been watching an item all week with a low ish start price. It's quite bulky and was collection only. As it was a) high interest to me and b) 100 miles away, I asked the seller if I could send my own Courier.

They refused as it was "cash on collection only" and didnt understabd how I could possibly pay...

I said with erm, Paypal or I'd send a Postal Order.

...Anyway they messaged me within 3 minutes of the item ending saying they will accept a Postal Order.

The item went unsold and I went elsewhere...

I dont blame them to be honest. An item that is collection only usually means it is too big/ delicate to be posted safely.

Even if you pay for a courier the seller will still have the hassle of trying to package the item safely & then wait in all day for a courier to arrive. Then there is the risk of the item, being damaged while in transit so the buyer will get there money back & the seller is left with a worthless item.

When I sell items for collection I wouldnt consider any other method apart form collection in person.

Plus, if you accept payment via PayPal and don't have proof of it being handed over, the buyer could say they didn't receive it and claim the money back.

I'd get a tracking number and the Courier would also give the person at the collection end a reciept of some sort.

Not too big and not delicate either to be honest. Just wrapping in a bin bag will suffice...

With the greatest respect, the seller said 'collection only' amd I would take that as 'collection only' and not 'we will wait in for courier'.

I had this a year or two ago, the buyer mucked me about, I waited around for a courier and needless to say one never showed. It was sorted in the end by one of his friends collecting it but only after I had wasted loads of my time.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

If the item was collected by the buyer, then you wouldn't have any proof that the item was handed over, so the buyer could do a false chargeback on paypal. A hand written receipt from the seller probably wouldn't mean diddly squat.

...but I'd book a Courier and pay the extra 4 quid to get a guaranteed three hour time slot and supply the seller with any info they need.

I could wait and see if they re list and just buy it and say I'll collect it.

    *sigh*

The Courier would give the person a "collection note" or whatever they call them...

Which is obviously absolutely no use at all if they have accepted paypal.

I too have lost sales as I refuse to allow people to send a courier, for me collection only means just that. They arrive they take the item and load it into their car and drive off.
