Gas Meter - New property

Just moved into a new property and the gas meter isn't installed. Under the sink there is the gas pipe in and the gas pipes out to the cooker and boiler. The gas meter is sat next to the pipes but not coupled up.
The question is, if I sign up for the new fuel offer with Scottish Power will them reconnect the meter for me?
Any help would be gratefully received

I would have thought so, phone them and ask. Whose name is on the meter?IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Find out if and who the current supplier to the property is, and contact them and explain the situation.
How to identify your gas supplier
If it's a brand new property, perhaps there is no current supplier (but that would lead to questions like how has the developer commisioned the gas installations?)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Transco don't exist any-more they got merged into the national grid company who now maintain the network.0

Do you know why there is no meter installed in the property, is a new build or a renovation? Has the property been empty a long time before you took it over?
If new build and recently installed supply then simply contact gas supplier of choice to have meter installed, if property empty for a period of time then you may need to get a live or dead check done on the pipe work to ensure gas still in it and pipe fit for purpose. The live or dead check has to be arranged either by yourself or your nominated gas supplier with the gas network in your area - but the fitting of the meter is up to your nominated gas supplier to arrangeI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -

House circa 1890, been empty for about 18 months. Both input and output pipes are there, just no meter attached to them even though it is sat next to them.0 -
OK the incoming gas service has a valve on it. Is that valve turned off and if so,is the outlet of it capped such that if you turn the gas on,no gas escapes?
Yes?
OK,then i would advise that you phone the national gas emergency service on 0800111999 and appraise them of the situation and that you have bought a new property, there is a meter on site, but you have found it disconnected. They will then send someone to check. Of course we are presuming that that meter actually lives in your house and that it hasnt been acquired from elsewhere.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

1. is there a control handle attached to the pipe or a cap if yes to either do not turn it on or remove it
2. is there a smell - if yes then call 0800 111 999 and they will attend and make safe
if no proceed to next question
3. Have you been left a card or warning notice by either national grid or your gas net work or a gas safe engineer saying your gas has been turned off or that they need access to turn it on - if no proceed to next question if yes it should give you the number to call to have it reconnected (may have been done during mains replacement or the gsr may have left it all capped if knowing house would be unoccupied)
so if no card and pipe capped or with handle on and no smell of gas then it is a live or dead check required - if pipe uncapped and no smell most likely a live or dead check or check for safety by the gas network if you are in national grid area then call 0845 605 6677 if not ng area they can provide you with the correct number to dial.
I would not suggest that you turn it on and check if gas there.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
Still not got it connected - been too busy with work.
Could I sign up with scottish power through a a cashback site and then when it is processed, call SP and have them install the meter?0
