Your gas usage in partcicular seems very high!

Are you by any chance being billed as if you have an imperial meter (in ft) when in actual fact you have an imperial meter (m)? Has your gas neter been changed from an imperial one with 4 digits in the reading, to a metric one (with 5 numbers in the reading)?

    Yes it does Molerat
  • Your house sounds like an old car a "gas guzzler". You can use your efforts to move but first I would:-
    a) Get loft insulated
    b) Get cavity wall insulation
Cost of above with grants from your supplier about £200
    c) Can you do anything about your windows?
    d) ask your supplier to send someone round to survey for energy efficiency help.
    e) Can you replace your boiler - local grants may be availble.
    f) replace all bulbs with low energy.
    G) make sure all appliances are turned off at night, buy some auto shut down plugs and timers.

Now have alook at your tariff, contact your current supplier first ans see what they can offer before moving. If you try to move you will have to pay all outstanding debts before they will let you leave, ask them if they can help you by spreading your debt on a Direct Debit repayment plan as well as calculating your usage on that plan.

    Good luck

Like The OP, I too have a 3 storey ice-box with only single-glazing on the ground floor (too expensive to replace huge bay and french doors). Boiler is about 25 years old . No cavities, so no cavity wall insulation. 2 sons in their 20's who have rooms like saunas with all the games systems/PCs on the go. Don't put the heating on until indoors temp falls below 16 dgrees. But "relatively" mild South West weather.

BUT our DD with npower Online 8 tariff has been £136 per month for the last year, latest bill (actual) wants to put it up to £148. Did some online comparisons and found Sign Online 18 (still npower) worked out much cheaper. Gave customer services a quick ring and they have transferred us to the cheaper tariff which will work out at £106 per month - saving £504 per annum! Penalty if we move again before July '11 but thrilled with the result.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

    Hello lovelife

There will be other tariffs that could save you money - for example, our Sign Online 18 tariff or our Football Saver tariff will both be cheaper for you.

Just give us a call on 0845 6720 073 and one of our advisors will be able to help you out.

    Kind Regards
