Basic account query

Hi,

I wish to be open a basic bank account without a credit check being done, can anyone confirm which banks will definitely not carry out such a check?

Been considering an RBS or HSBC account, does anyone know these bank's processes well to say for definite?

And if I can ask a follow up, if the account were opened, the debit card issued is essentially a Visa Electron even if it doesn't say that?

Many thanks in advance.

All banks will verify your identity to prevent money laundering.

The co-op cashminder and barclays cash card accounts are not credit scored so you should get one of these if you have bad or no credit. Despite the names they both come with full auth visa debit cards which are essentially electrons although they don't say it on them.

If you are talking about the basic accounts, then you will not be credit checked at all for it. All banks offer an account that can be opened without a credit check - just make sure they don't try to make you go for a normal account if that's not what you're after.

Bear in mind that RBS/Natwest have customer service issues, and HSBC do not give a debit card on their basic account (ATM card only). Barclays & Co-op are probably best for basic accounts.

I'd say that most banks have customer issues at times. Personally I've found RBS great but wouldn't recommend Barclays to my worst enemy.

RBS/NatWest perform a full credit check on you regardless of what current account you apply for

Are you sure? If they had I doubt that they'd have opened an account for me!

Yes they do. And if you score high enough they offer you the current account and if you don't then you get the Step Account. Its so they can flog you as many products as possible.

    Lloyds do the same.

So wouldn't the OP just apply for a Step account and not get credit checked?

I opened a Step a few years ago when my CR was rubbish and they gave me one. Just asking as things may have changed since I applied

  • Thanks for all the replies.

I'll see what happens when I go in and ask about the basic account on offer and given what I've read in the other threads here, will be clear about the type of account I want.

Most banks will credit check you, its just that they will offer a basic account if they find bad credit etc rather than decline you.

So if you want no credit checks be aware of this.

I'm surprised - I managed to get myself a Natwest Step account with no problems. I'm on a dmp and my credit rating is shot to pieces.
