Chihuahua puppy - Scam..?

Hi all,

Need your opinion on something..

My Mum has decided to get a dog – a Chihuahua. Looking at breed characteristics this sounds like a good match for her.

She has forwarded to me the email response from the person who posted the Ad which caught her eye and i just get the feeling something is off...

The persons English is not good (before anyone jumps on me, I understand you may be a KC breeder but not have the best grasp of English) but in conjunction with wanting to do a home visit before my mum looks at the dog (this was the bit that got me worried) and they have no contact details posted bar the email address, no phone number or address.

I understand the need for a home visit and in fact think its good practice by the breeder, but after you have seen the dog, its parents, home and agreed it may be a good match?

Sadly my mum is not au fait on the PC and can’t remember which site the Ad was posted either.

So how can I research this more for her... I have looked on the KC site and they are not the two breeders which are noted as being accredited, how to I check the pup is registered?

My mum is very keen on the pup in question and i feel she is rushing ahead, so how can i protect her?

I have just reiterated

DONT LEAVE OR GIVE A DEPOSIT

But is there any other scam or trick they use to get money? Information?

Thanks

Tygermoth

My MIL to be was recently almost scammed with a 'puppy con' but thankfully no money changed hands.

Here's a link to a site detailing the practice:

Hope it all works out ok for you and your mum,

If they will not give full details during the email exchange it may well be a scam. anybody who wants to take money off you in your own home, with no means of contacting them, and not leave the item with you is likely a scam artist, whether the item in question is a dog or a diamond.

its a scam, alot of the time they say they will ship you the puppy/kitten etc from somewhere like Ireland, their English is bad as they are usually African, I have take great delight in exchanging emails with them, just for fun to see how many times they will trip themselves up!
Gumtree is really bad for this.
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.

Gumtree is absolutely full of those.

Pedigree puppies being offered for some £150, with lovely photos etc... every single breed is being "offered" for that silly money on Gumtree and I am absolutely shocked that the Gumtree does nto ban those ads, so many people think they are getting a bargain and then paying a "deposit" to secure that dream cheap pedigree pup for themselves.

Your mum should never ever allow into her house anyone who's details she does not know and is not able to verify - after all, even Gas meter readers carry an ID, would she let anyone in without one?

Please, please - try to reason with her as I can see how a lot of people think they are getting a bargain and let their guard down....

    All the best

She could try the Kennel Club website who have a list of accredited breeders for each breed.

Yes its a well known scam. Often the dogs are offered free and then the seller will ask say £300 for courier delivery of the dog - mum will pay her £300 and no dog will arrive.

There are a number of chis on Little Dog Rescue and other sites. Have a look at dogs blog.

Sounds like the ideal little house dog for the OPs mum too!
Bud is a very lovely 12 month old Chihuahua cross Jack Russell Terrier. He has come into us after being rescued from a neglectful home.
Bud is an absolutely fabulous little dog. He’s a very happy little chap, loves to play and is very affectionate. He gets on brilliantly with people, dogs and children. Bud is almost 100% housetrained, but will need supervision for a while to ensure that this continues in his new home. He travels well in the car and is keen to please, so should be easy to train.

.. almost 100% housetrained, good in the car, happy, loves people and kids, keen to please.. what more could you ask for!
