Laptop old and slow - please help!

Hi I'm hoping that you'll be able to help me...

I have a Acer Aspire 3000 and bought it about 5 years ago. It has seen me through uni and has lasted well. However it is now incredibly slow to do anything (opening a word file can take upto 10 minutes).

Can't really afford a new laptop so wondered if there are tips you can give me to speed it up.

I regularly defreg and tend to work from my external HD which contains all my work documents (backed up on work network).

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated - I'm getting very frustrated!

look at upgrading your memory. Go to crucial (Google them) and they have an online scanner which will tell you what memory you could have and prices. Secondly you could reinstall your operating system if you have the original discs. There are several online tutorials on how to do it to help you.
    Hope this helps.

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Upgrade to 1GB RAM. Back up everything. Format the hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows.

Here are the HijackThis and malware scan logs. Not really sure how to buy more memory. How does buying memory work? Is it like getting another external HD?

Also i read the thread above that was suggested and it suggests restoring factory settings - is this something i should try? And if I back up my computer onto the External HD I have will it restore all the files/programs that seem to be needlessly running?

Sorry if I sound dumb - not really sure about techie things...

    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

    Hows it running now?

One major thing is your using the resource intensive Mcrapee. It would definitely run quicker if you removed it (using the REMOVAL tool as simply uninstalling leaves bits behind) and installing a free lightweight av on (AVAST, AVIRA or MSE)

You need PC2700 DDR 333MHz SO-DIMM, but first you need to ascertain as to whether you have 2 x 256MB RAM modules or 1 x 512MB RAM. A new 512MB RAM module will be £15 or less.
