Debtfree romance ideas

Due to our money issues my husband and I have been having a few problems.
He rang me this afternoon from work and told me that he had asked his mum to have the kids next month so we could go away for a few days. He said he wants to pamper me to show me how much he loves me. The place he wants to take me costs £500 for 2 nights bed, breakfast and evening meal. It is lovely, but we just can’t afford it.

I know he is trying and I am going to feel awful for turning him down. I just want to be able to offer an alternative money saving idea in its place so he does not feel so hurt when I say no to his luxury weekend.

How do you keep romance alive when you are trying to watch the pennies? We really need some time alone as our marriage is under a lot of strain, but everything costs so much money, even a night in with some new sexy underwear and a bottle of wine!

Where does he want to take you - Malmaison?
There are just so many Pub B&B that are offering breaks at a fraction of that price. You would be sure that your food is freshly prepared, usually the best breakfasts ever, and normally the rooms are as well appointed as any 'top' hotel. I would reccomend Yorkshire (best beer in England)!

When we had the luxury of an occasional babysitter, we used to stay in :D

We would lie, and say we had been to the pub, but really we would just enjoy being alone together ;)

We haven't had a night out together now for over six years, but we couldnt be closer.

You dont have to go somewhere expensive to show your love for each other, it can be done at home for nowt.

Why not just go out somewhere nice for the day and have a 'quiet' evening in?

The place serves gourmet food and has a jacuzzi, four poster bed champagne in the room, that kind of thing.

It looks truely wonderful and part of me says just go, but my realistic head says that it would be a waste.

Yes I agree, make the most of the peace and quiet.

Why don't you cook a lovely meal, bottle of wine, light the candles, nice hot bath together etc... :blushing:

The nights are darker now and could be very romantic...... ;)

Why spend money when you don't have to

I'm sure it would be lovely to splurge on the luxury break, but could you persuade him to do the economy version for now, and save grand gesture for when finances look more secure? Like being on a promise!

Or shop around ;) we managed to get a night at a luxury hotel (jnr suite), 3 course meal for 2, bottle of wine, a whisky, a cigar and 2 baileys and a HUGE breakfast in bed for about £180 - not cheap I know but it was fantastic and worth every penny! Often sunday nights are cheaper than any other night as the hotels often have empty rooms on a sunday.
No matter where you go take a bottle of champers with you and ask for a bucket of ice and two champagne glasses to be sent up. You can get a good bubbly for under £10 instead of £30-40 at the hotel. Take some bath bombs from Lush with you and some nice shower stuff (check the freebies board lol) and enjoy having a bath together in the evening and a shower in the morning :)
Take a basket with you and buy some french bread and some ham, pate and salami and have a picnic weather permitting :) for lunch

£500 is a bit much but there is no saying you two can't spend a little on being "you" once in a while :) Have you checked to see if you have enough Tesco vouchers to exchange for vouchers for some of the posher hotels they have deals with?

You could even use some of the discount codes on the board for some of the catalogs and order some saucy underwear for pennies to make it that little bit "extra" special

I second the why spend money if you don't have to, there are so many romantic ways to spend quality time together which are cheap but wonderful.

My OH and i have not had a night out in years and we barely get a moment together what with his job, 3 children (one with speaicl needs who requires alot of full time attention) and all other commitments. We just make the most of any time we do have, even a food shop can be made enjoyable as any child free time is so precious for us.

I think instead of trying to show you how much he loves you in such a material way it would be more romantic and affective for both of you to write letters to each other remembering all the reasons you fell in love, and what you enjoy most about each other, and then spend your free weekend, laughing, remembering, appreciating and planning for your joint future rather than digging yourself deeper into problems which will only be covered by a pamper session for a short while.
