Me and DH have only just started cooking our own meals from scratch. My mum made most things fresh when I lived at home but I just couldn't seem to do the same. That said, we are giving it a try ourselves and are so far loving it. Not only does the food taste a million times better but we feel healthier in ourselves. We've only been doing this for the last week and a bit but I really hope we can keep it up
Keep up the good work!
When I was with my ex he complained about the mess... so I stopped!
My Husband nurtures my cooking and after 4 years I am making food I never dreamed I was capable off... and it tastes wonderful!!!
Yay you!We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
hmm stealing the status idea
and yes i buy the occasional thing (M&S chook kiev) that is currently beyond my skills but i prefer to make from scratch
Nonny mouse and Proud!!

I was surprised recently when someone I know said that a certain supermarket lasagne was much better than anything "anyone" could make themselves.
It all depends what your tastebuds are used to. My DH overheard somebody at work once raving over a Muller mississippi mud yogurty thing, so I bought one to try and it was disgusting! It was full of artificialy sweeteners and other yucky things.
Bought cakes all have a certain taste to them - must be the preservatives - and a home made cake is just so quick and easy. I made a lovely lemon drizzle cake for pudding tonight and it only took a couple of minutes to get it all ready.
I honestly don't think any mass produced meal can be anywhere near as nice as homemade.0 -
I do have to confess to buying curry paste. I'm rubbish at making it from scratch - no matter how many spices I put in it's always bland, so it's Pataks for me!0

DH is in charge of cooking at the moment as he's not working. He does a lot from scratch - tried toad in the hole the other day (I was impressed) but he does also use packet caserole mix and some jars of sauce as that's where he's not confident. Not enough to worry me or blow the grocery budget though. I don't mind as long as its proper meat and veg going with it.
I'm proud of him as MIL simply will not cook and doesn't get the concept of homemade food.
We just don't buy boxed or frozen food unless it is something DS or one of his friends have particularly requested (and I don't know how to create something similar). DS made a really good lasagne at school the other day and remembered to bring it home for tea. That's one less meal I have to cook now!
His school has just got back into proper cookery lessons and he is really enjoying it.This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
Fingers crossed x0 -

We've never cracked a good curry either and have to rely on the paste. I just add a lot of tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms to liven it up.This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.

My MIL can't cook much, it's mainly from a bag or it's a chicken roast... but is constantly on at me that I should make things from scratch and cook properly!
I couldn't work it out... she's had my food and knows I cook (very well)... then she started to complain that I make lasagne from scratch (2 1/2 hours cooking time on the meat sauce) and tells me I should try using a Jar!!!!
Then it clicked... she picks on me because I make her feel inadequate! With her my Husband never ate veg or sauce with tomato in and she gave in... we me he eats anything and raves about it!
Now she's realised I don't bake much... so she's getting at me about that! Telling me the hows and why's (just because my FIL needs dessert DAILY!!!)
Why should I bake often... my son and I don't eat sweets food much, and my husband doesn't mind just having them once a week!!
BUT the truth is she BUYS her sweets in... but tells me to bake them!

I cook all our meals from scratch, but we do have the odd takeaway. I don't like ready meals, don't trust them and can't afford them!
If anyone wants an easy, low cost way to make wonderful HM meals a slow cooker is great. I love mine and there are a couple of fab slow cooker recipe threads on here0 -
I do mostly cook from scratch, honest! I do keep some tried and trusted standbys from my local Aldis in the freezer or cupboard. Everyone has nights where they dont feel well enough or are too busy to cook from scratch dont they? besides which the ones I have are absolutely delish! like the lamb shanks from Aldis!
I am making it my mission in life to teach two of my grandkids to cook - they are six now and tuesday I introduced them to the joys of baking coconut kisses. they loved doing it and eating the results! otherwise they are going to grow up thinking that ALL food comes out of maccy Ds or Kcfs or that all meals go DING first!
I am NOT a food snob in any way - but I do believe in good fresh ingredients and learning some basic recipes, and that has to be MUCH healthier than buying ready made!0 -
Thought I'd give you some joy by dropping in to say I'm 25 and lots of my friends and I cook most things from scratch. I like to bake when I have the time too, and one of my friends is really really into baking as well, she ought to be a patissier.
I do think it's to do with what you were used to while growing up and how much cooking your family did at home with you around or helping out.0
