Sort Of Tech Question

if you have broadband setup on your line, and for some reason you need to change your number (ie: get a new number from BT to stop any malicious calls)

Does this affect the broadband connection? Am just wondering whether its the Line that is broadband enabled, or the number, am thinking the number is just the terminating point on the line, and its the line that is enabled.

Hope this makes sense to anyone?!

Apologies if this should be in the Techie Stuff section

  • I think it does, its equivalent to moving house I would say. Best bet is to call up your internet provider and ask them unless of course someone else on this forum can answer your question.

  • Hi 5limJim,

    I can answer this:

Changing your telephone number will remove the ADSL (broadband) from your line, you will need to have ADSL reinstalled on your line once you get your new telephone number. I don't know why this is the practice as it's not as though the physical line changes, it doesn't make much sense to me - but it is what it is!

You may incur fees from your ISP to do so - however if you're outside of your 12 month contract, see if they'll do it for free in exchange for a new 12 month contract.

if you do go down this path, ask your ISP if they can do a spontaneous reprovide for you, this will mean that your ADSL will go live at the same time as your new number.

    I hope that is helpful!

    Kind regards,
    Samara

  • Or you could just ask that they block all withheld numbers. They will do this for free if you expain your worries - also there is now a way of stopping calls from certain numbers if you know who it is (and you have the number to hand) - ring BT and ask about both options before changing your number.
Aint got a signature - as I cant think of anything world wisely to say.

never thought about asking them to block the withheld numbers. will give them a call...

    thanks guys,

Samara, thanks for the update about the line as well, does seem odd that even though there's nothing physical done to it that you have to get it re-enabled on the line.
