I have an 8 month old cavalier KC, I have found training him quite easy and a lot of fun.

I used a clicker to help with toilet training and basic training such as sit, down etc. I don't really use it now as he picks things up so well without it.

I would also advise crate training, it helped so much with toilet training and also if you're looking after him by yourself, it's a good way of having a little break as mine was a complete handful when he was younger, had to watch him every single second. It's also good for when you go out, my little monkey would have chewed the house to pieces if i'd left him out of the crate!

My dog has never weed in excitement and he gets very excited when my OH comes home so I wouldn't worry too much about that, it may not happen.

Are you sure there are no training classes at all near you? Have you checked the kennal club website? Your local petshop? Vet? Googled it? I think they're a good way to get your dog socialising as well as training them, it would be a shame if you couldn't join one.

Youtube is great for training videos as well, I used them a lot whilst waiting to start training classes.
