I want my dogs to be excited to see me. It must be quite hurtful for a dog to think that you are not pleased to see them too.
My collie used to be terrible for jumping up, it made it a nightmare to get in the house. Then I started ignoring him until I had got me and the shopping in, coats off and sat down. After I had sat down he got his acknowedgement and attention and love. These days he comes out of his bed stands smiling amicably, wagging his tail calmly and watches me. Waiting secure in the knowledge that any minute now I'll sit down and call him and then Mum is really back and he can go nuts. It's like we moved the "Mum's come home" part from when the front door opens to when my backside hits the sofa. That two minutes to get the shopping in and get my coat off and flick the kettle on is the difference between us both being in danger or safe. I love my boyfriend too but if he was all over me like a rash so I couldn't get through the door and my legs were scratched raw you would see this as unworkable no? I don't kiss boyfriend till the shopping's on the worktop and my coat is on the peg either.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be provocative it's just that where I see a far happier dog with much better relationship you see mean. Clearly we're not on the same page. I wouldn't be much of a dog lover if I didn't consider at any suggestion of hurtfulness very carefully so I'm hoping you can explain so that I understand better what part of that seems cruel to you please?I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)
As of the last count I have cleared [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt.

I agree, ignoring when you walk in doesn't mean they get all the love they deserve after 5 minutes. I didn't think dogs could feel 'hurt'? But I suppose no one really knows what goes on in their heads, no matter what course you go on.My collie used to be terrible for jumping up, it made it a nightmare to get in the house. I don't need to ignore my dogs to teach them to be patient. A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0

Which is all very nice for you, but unless you can qualify it or clarify your methods at least slightly then it's meaningless.
I would genuinely like to know from what angle you consider my care of my dog should be improved. Is that a question you are able to answer?I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.

Hmmm. I also had the problem of one of my dogs peeing out of sheer excitement when I came back from being somewhere. The other dog (same age, different breed) was fine and I was becoming totally exasperated. I have never needed to reprimand the dogs for anything as am a firm believer in positive re-enforcement as a training method. So after speaking to my local dod trainer I tried the "ignoring" method and it worked brilliantly! The dogs are still excited to see me but because I don't bend down and fuss them when they are so hyper, she doesn't leak urine. She is rewarded ALWAYS with a big cuddle once she has calmed down. I don't see this as mean in any way. I lead my little pack and this is how I have decided we will behave when we greet each other. The dogs are secure and confident with my CONSISTENT behaviour. The poster who describes such behaviour as mean should maybe understand that these are dogs with specific canine needs (primarily to have an established role within a pack) not children in a school playground...0

Its VERY hard not to go mad cuddling the dogs back when they go berserk on seeing you. But I always remember Caesar Milan saying that a pack leader would just acknowledge the adulation not go mad too He said to just put an open hand on your dogs side briefly to acknowledge the welcome you receive. It does actually seem to have a calming affect on dogs when you do that. 0 He said to just put an open hand on your dogs side briefly to acknowledge the welcome you receive. Weird. I have a cavalier king charles and she has never weed with excitement upon my return. How long do you anticipate leaving her for?
She is my first dog and I did the basic training but that was all.Ellie

She isn't a King Charles shes a yorkie and quite a little one at that. my new puppy will be a King Charles and ive never had another breed apart from the yorkie so i dont really know what to expect. Although im imagining she will be easier than the yorkies were as they can be hard work sometimes!0
