Paypal/Gumtree Scam?

I think i probably already know the answer to this, but i know there are some very knowledgeable people on here who know more about paypal than i do.
I'm posting on behalf of a friend who i think may have fallen for a scam on Gumtree. They wanted tickets for T in the park and found some on gumtree. They didn't want to pay in full upfront in case they were not genuine tickets so asked the seller if they could pay half up front and half when they received the tickets. He said that was fine.
Once they paid they asked if he could forward them the email confirmation and he said he would. However they never received the confirmation, they have phoned him a few times and also emailed him but have heard nothing from him, nor have they received their tickets.
So, my question really is have they lost their £180? And if so is there any way to get it back? They paid by paypal as they thought they would be covered in case it was a scam.
Any advice gratefully received:A

I would get a dispute lodged with paypal immediately. If you leave it too long, the seller will have cleared his paypal account and your friends would get nothing.gunsandbanjos wrote: »I think i probably already know the answer to this, but i know there are some very knowledgeable people on here who know more about paypal than i do.

Clearing out a paypal account will not effect any paypal claim (the rules changed last September) if you win and have followed correct procedures you will be refunded even off ebay and even if they have no money in their account.
What's important in this case is how the OP 'friend' paid. If you paid by sending gift through Paypal you will have no buyer protection at all If you paid vian an invoice/request money payment you will have paypal buyer protection and the seller will have to prove delivery with online tracking so you should winf. You have 45 days from the purchase to open a claim0 -
Thanks for the replies, i will find out how she paid and i will get back to you.
She just got back to me and the seller has sent her an email invoice which she has paid through. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

I have this horrible feeling it will be a gift payment. As that's what scammers normally request as there is no way they can chargeback.0 -

Just edited my post while you were quoting it i think, sorry. It was not a gift payment. He sent an invoice. Just checking with her how long ago.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
There are plenty of Gumtree scams going on. Most are related to tickets, mobiles and accommodation. It's easier to scam on Gumtree because you can use any email address and no credit card/bank details or verification is needed. That's why Gumtree say that you should only deal face to face with the Vendors. The man without a signature.0

She paid on May 5th, so this is the 45th day after payment! Just phoned and told her to open a dispute ASAP:eek:The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

Dispute has now been opened in paypal resolution centre, what is the next step. Does the seller have to reply? The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

If the seller does not reply then you will almost certainly win0
