Absolutely !!!! And if it does take you waaaay longer do do than you thought because it's a tricky one, bear in mind my earlier advice :)

Once you fix a strangers PC you become a friend for life.

They ring you everyday for the most trivial of things (how do I defrag, how do I print on both sides etc.) it is relentless.

It is what eventually stopped me from building/selling PC's in the past.... the aftersales is horrendous. If you are like me, far too kind to say no, then it gets completely suffocating.

I only help one person who's not close family with PC stuff, and that's my mate's dad. To everyone else, I'm too busy. It's way too much hassle.

They'll try and haggle you down to an amount that will make you doing the job pointless. "Will you fix my printer? There's tea and biccies in it for you!". I'll be right round as soon as you can tell me what shops can I spend chocolate digestives in.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

    .

Thats their problem. All my literature states no responsibility for data loss and it is up to the customer to ensure its backed up - unless its agreed I'll do it as part of the job which is chargeable.

As for "possibly declare yourself to HMRC", that should be "MUST declare".

Laptop repairs are easy. 30% are duff screens, 30% are fans and heatsinks clogged full of fluff, 30% are dodgy power sockets. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO SOLDER and you need to be able to completely dismantle a laptop. I can strip a laptop, remove the mainboard and rebuild it in about 30 minutes. If you take an age to dismantle one because of your inexperience, thats something you can't charge for. For example, a blocked fan is a minimum charge - a power socket likewise.
