Where would you break this long journey?

Hols this year is in a cottage about 45 minutes northwest of Fort William in Scotland. We'll (2 adults, 2 teenagers) be starting close to Gatwick airport and on TomTom the journey is showing about 10 hours driving. We are planning on stopping one night on the way up and one on the way back, but can't agree on where to look for a B&B or small hotel.

The car is quite comfortable but I'd like to break the journey at around 5 or 6 hours each way. I make that about 30-60 minutes south of Glasgow on the way up and around the Lakes on the way back. Where would you stop?

Carlisle is fairly big city on the way up. Should be able to travel lodge near by the motorway. Depends what you want out of your stop places. Just someone to sleep for the night? not sure about back down.

On the way up, 5 hours should put you somewhere between Kendal and Penrith. As Mankysteve says, it depends on what you want out of the stop. If you are in the national trust, you stopping near Kendal gives you Sizergh castle and gardens to have a look at (non members £7.15), and Kendal if you just want to have a stroll around a town. Up at Penrith, you have the Rheged centre with an IMAX screen, and about 20mins away is Aira Force - a short 2-3mile walk around some waterfalls.

We are back up there in a couple of weeks and we've booked a room in Moffat as we are leaving late.

Ha ha! I saw that one, but I'm quite tall so, no, quite a wide one.

Thanks guys. The lakes look to be a good bet both ways - North on the way up and South on the way down. Now to start searching for those interesting little hotels!

Do it in a oner. I used to travel to Cornwall towing a caravan from Glasow to Perranporth/Croyde, 12-13 hours. It is a long journey but at least your there in one day.

    Hi HC,

I'm doing virtually the same journey at the end of July - Kent to Fort William. And we too are stopping for 1 or 2 nights on the way up and 1 night on the way down.

I travel to Glasgow a few times a year by and car and I would argue that your total driving time of 10 hours is rather ambitious. The quickest I've made Glasgow in one day over the last year or two is 9 hours. And to get to Fort William is probably another 3-5 hours.

if you can stop at glasgow on the way up,have a nice night or two in the city centre (try menzies hotel, or others in the scotland thread),
then have your holiday and learn the other things there is to do in glasgow and surrounding area.
