Hi
Just debating whether to use 95 or 97 ROn fuel on my next fillup. I know 97 is slightly more expensive, but will it give me more mpg or performance? Or will the only thin it do is lighten my wallet?
Thanks

I notice a very very slight difference, the car seems to run a little smother and I think it feels a little more responsive. Not made any difference to the MPG in my case.0

The only thing I can give is from a personal test, car was an E46 3 series BMW, it took a tankfull bar a few drops to get from a location near ramsgate to the ferry terminal at Heysham, going down filled up Heysham with normal fuel, got to destination it said I had 40 miles left, coming back, filled up in kent with super unleaded, got to Heysham it said I had 37 miles left, route exact same both ways, traffic same no holdups, average speed give or take a couple of mph the same. only difference it was a little better on acceleration but did this use more fuel? From what I can gather here and elsewhere, is that it very much depends on the make and model of the car - I'll have to suck it and see :beer:0

What does it say in your car handbook? Some cars require premium fuel as standard (like high performance sports cars) so you should be filling up with it if thats the case.Lack of money is the root of all evil.

I think most places' Super is 98 (or 99) Octane now. Shell used to be 97 (but not anymore - as I was informed on this forum a while ago).
I've used Super a few times to try it out, but didn't notice much difference.
Apparently in the USA their regular is 91 Octane! Can anybody confirm this?.....0 -
If you have a highly tuned turbo engine you might notice an improvement, Test results show the figures
are small, Its mostly in your mind.
You think its better so you feel its better. Lots of tests prove otherwise.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Some relatively small engines recommend super unleaded, like the old 1.4 16v VW engines (I reckon most people fill these up with standard unleaded either due to not caring which fuel it says it needs, or because it's "cheaper" - one can only speculate if this may contribute to the engine's reputation for piston ring failure) - see your owners manual or around the fuel cap for the recommended fuel type.
I am guessing there's little to no benefit using fuel other than that specified by the manufacturer.
On another note I once saw a Lamborghini Gallardo driver filling up with standard unleaded - I lol'd, spend that much on a car and try save a few coppers on the fuel! :rotfl:0 -
