Hi, has anyone tried the HRI clear complexion tablets for acne, did they work? If so, how long did you take them to notice any results?

    Thanks.

    Hello
I suffered from HELLISH acne for years. I too went to Dr Chu and he really knows his stuff but focuses on antibiotics. He also prescribed Istotrexin gel (which I probably over used in an attempt to get rid of it faster - resulting in red, dry skin and me thinking 'this is not working"). I was also on antibiotics for years. My 'calmest' skin period was whilst on Dianette (the now (banned?) contraceptive pill), and Minocin MR at the same time. In the end I got demented by only being able to control it with drugs.

I felt that there had to be another solution. As I was feeling hideous because of my skin my comfort was to hide as much as possible (didn't go out much to avoid being stared at or having to put on a faceful of makeup to a sore face!). In comforting myself I found a lot of cups of tea and biccies passing my lips! Everyday was a stress nightmare because it was a vicious circle of trying to hide and there being no 'instant' solution.

Stress is a big factor but there are a couple of types - one is the stress that you put on your skin physiologically - eating crap food, (which use up/wastes your precious energy stores as your body has to use a lot of effort to metabolise them. That is then energy not able to be used to repair your skin). Not getting out in the sun or fresh air or exercising (because you are hiding) is equally pants - fresh air, sun and excercise are good de-stressors and feel good factors.

Then there is the psychological stress of 'oh my god I do not want to go out and face the world today I feel so hideous" - that is stress and it is with you every day when you look at your skin each morning feeling like cack. Bizarrely I think just admiting 'yes, I have ACNE' and surrendering to the fact rather than denying it and hoping it would just disappear seemed to help me turn a corner. I looked at my diet. I tried my damndest to cut down on sugar and milk (not cut out because I think that would have been stressful).

I tried green smoothies and 'therapeutic' does of multivitamins (not individual ones which could lead to a deficiency or poisoning:eek: ) Patrick Holford books were a god send on that front.

At the same time I also discovered a phenomenal topical product from Paula's Choice.com. BHA 2% liquid. OMG this product is a GODSEND. It is comparable to AHA because it is an exfoliant (which is all important for acne sufferers who's skin is producing and sloughing off way too much oil etc). BUT the main difference (as Paula's video's on the site will explain) is that BHA is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and is oil soluble so can get inside the pore itself. AHA's cannot do that and are better for purely sun damaged skin.

There is nothing like the BHA 2% on the high street in the UK or any other skin care brand I checked out. It has been my main ongoing everyday support for 3/4 years now and I have not looked back. No antibiotics, no contraceptive pill. If you are at your wits end please try it. It is about £19 a bottle + p&P but it lasts me 6 months and it delivers - boy does it deliver. The also do sample size sachets but I cannot recall how long it took to see a difference so you might need a 2 week supply of those.

Anyway - I hope this helps.

If you are using Topical retinoids (Retin-A/Isotrexin) they do work but you need to be so gentle with them and only use the pea sized amount recommended. Also try using them every 3rd night for a couple of weeks, then every 2nd night etc until it is on every night until your skin is used to them - and you need to leave at least 20 mins after washing your face before applying them so your face is totally dry.

If you are using AHA's, BHA's or topical retinoids you MUST, MUST, MUST use a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF on your face (and affected areas) because these products make your skin susceptible to sunburn - which would just add to your problems.

However, before you think 'that's a bit rubbish' remember that the biggest factor in wrinkles in ageing is sun damage so by using it as part of your routine not only are you avoiding sunburn because of the topicals you are using, you are also avoiding ageing by sun damage. :j

God that was a LONG post. Hope it is useful.
