I think the value of the original advice is limited, because the major ink manufacturers go to a lot of trouble to ensure that their ink is of the highest quality and works sucessfully with their printers - they ought to, because they charge a fortune for it! Compatible cartridges may work, or they may not.

We had an immense amount of trouble with a large A3 inkjet printer from HP when we tried compatible cartridges "to save money", and it took several months of hassle and expense before we decided to move back to the 'real' HP cartridges. Since when, we've had no problems whatever.

Conversely, we're still putting 'compatible' laser toner cartridges into our ten-year-old HP LaserJet 4M, and the slightly newer LaserJet 4100...

I am an IT professional and have worked in IT for over 22 years. Your response is correct for company or work printers, where they are used heavily on a daily basis to print a myriad of documents (word, excel, powerpoint, etc.). It is worth investing the extra money for high-quality ink compatible ink cartridges.

However, in spite of the advise people may get from printer manufacturers, PCworld, etc., home printers do not need the high quality ink cartridges and refill kits are more than adequate. As the original OP stated, I'm afraid printer cartridges are a rip off for home printerss and should be treated with the contempt they deserve:).

Refill kits are messy at the best of times, CISS kits work out cheaper and cleaner.

I tried this and got covered in ink...but then again, some cartridges are easier to refill

Awesome attitude, you'll do well in the Techie Stuff section.

You missed the bit about it refilling the cartridges multiple times didn't you?

And the bit where he didn't say it worked on all printers.

At least he's trying to help rather than complaining about other people's suggestions about how to save money on a money saving site...
They were questions, not comments, which you have not answered. Which is to be expected from the stupid morons who use bully boy tactics on these pages. I see further comments which prove this bully boy attitude. Drive off anyone who is not one of your gang. Well it won't work on me. I will just post more and more and more.

YOU are the one replying. Who needs to get a life? Silly smilies instead of intellectual repartee. Me thinks you also need to get some education.

What an idiot ? How can you question anyone's education or repartee with the appalling quality of your response to sirmarcus ?

I will illustrate your lack of IT knowledge. I bet that you cannot provide me an answer within 1 minute with what DCE and DTE stands for as well as which a printer conforms to ? Not difficult if you understand IT.

I am now counting and will post a response within 60 secs.
