Sorry to hear about your dad.

Don't they have advisors at your college or Connextions they should be able to help.

I guess your college isn't open now? Speak to Connextions.

First of all my condolences to you...

Why don't you give the Citizens Advice Bureau a call or if they don't have a number go in and speak to them. They should be able to point you in the right direction on what help if any you can get...
  • If your course is full time you might be entitled to some sort of bursary? I was reading something on one of the posts here in the student money saving section about it the other day so it might be worth reading through some of the posts.

im so sorry for your loss, darling, you must be going through enough right now without worrying about money.

the other posters are correct - CAB would be a good bet, as you can turn up this morning and im sure they will see you, especially given the circumstances.
  • So sorry to hear about your dad Amy. If anyone can help you, it will be these people here on the Benefits board. They know their stuff.

Hope it all works out for you.

Hello Amy, I am so sorry for your loss, please don't be petrified about things, just take it one day at a time. No one starves in Britain these days so deal with your grief. There is a lot of good advice here,
Did dad have any savings that you can use. Could you ask for extra hours at work.

Dont hesitate to post back here for support, sometimes even just having a chat helps.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Again, sorry to hear that about your loss which has been compounded by financial worries and estrangement from your mum. As per previous posters, you should find that the Citizens Advice Bureau and Connexions, plus perhaps your college support services can help you.

You don't state if the property is rented (social landlord or private), owned outright or mortgaged by your father or whether he was claiming benefits or working, for example, nor whether he was still married.

If you are confused or concerned about your right to stay in the property and how this could be sorted out, then either provide more information detailed above or contact Shelter directly on their freephone number (you may also find that CAB can advise on this anyhow).

You say you're at college. Is this for further or higher education? Student services should have advice they can give you. You can also apply for the learner support fund.

What do you receive now in terms of benefits / student finance? (if anything)

i really haven't a clue what to advise, other than what others here have said about going to the cab. i would like to think there would be something you could claim as i'm assuming your dad will have been claiming tax credits for you,
i just wanted to say that i'm really sorry for your loss and to just take things one day at a time. deal with problems as and when they come up rather than worrying about what might happen tomorrow. i know thats easier said than done but right now you need to grieve for your dad and get yourself emotionally straight. it will get better with time i promise and there is plenty of help out there.
    best wishes

i just wanted to add...it may be a touchy subject as i'm not sure of the circumstances around it but...you say you have no contact with your mum, i was just wondering if there was anyway at all you could turn to her for support. me and my mum fell out for many years, but it was a death in the family that got us talking again. her mum, who i was very close to, died, she did the decent thing and told me. it went from there and we're now closer than i can ever remember being.
it was just a thought, as i said i dont know the circumstances around it. but if its at all possible, it could be worth contacting her, you never know, she might just surprise you as mine did.
