Electric Central Heating (NOT Night Storage)

  • Thanks for the link! :-)

For the last few years we've been paying around £60pm Gas and Electric combined.

A friend with storage heaters in a similar flat to ours tells me he spends around £80pm, which seems reasonable.

I've read of people having bills of up to £200pm, but these extreme cases usually seem to be radiator based wet electric systems rather than the underfloor.

£200 a month in winter with all electric heating is not extreme.

All electrical heating is 100% efficient.

To produce a given amount of heat(BTu) it takes the same amount of electricity regardless of how that heat is produced.

These heaters are no different to an immersion heater. The only difference with Underfloor heating (UFH) is that the water is not heated to as high a temperature as it would be to heat 'normal' radiators.

However if it takes, say, 60kWh a day to heat your house to, say. 21C using radiators, it will still take 60kWh with UFH.
  • Hi,

I know that I am going over old ground, but I am a Group Scout Leader for 7th Stalybridge Scout Group and have had many problems in the past with our heating. We origanly had a cylinder for hot water and a huge suspended oil heater to warm the main room. The problem is that oil is very expensive and we have had it stolen more times than I can count. Unfortunately the last time it was stolen the stole around £1500.00 worth of oil and completely destroyed the oil tank. I priced up having a gas main put into the building (£10,000), which is not plausable and the hot water is heated by a new modern storage tank but it is gravity fed, so we have virtually no hot water preasure.

We have looked into all sorts of heating solutions and the only plausable one is an electric combi boiler. The building is only used a couple of hours three nights a week and the odd party on a weekend. We have to apply for the funds as we are located in a deprived area. We also have a special charities rate for electricity, but not sure what that is. To give you an idea of the size of the room we need to heat and the current heating system please look at our website at the restoration pages. 7thstalybridge.org (I am not allowed too post links as I am new) I have know idea what KW to get as I have seen them as big as 14.4, but they are very expensive and not sure if we could get that sort of funding.

I hope somebody can help us

    Thanks

    Andy

    Hi

We have aged night storage heaters which are 'not fit for purpose'. There is no mains gas locally and oil prices are alarming!

I am opening up a fireplace so that I can install a woodburning/multifuel stove. I could use this to run a wet radiator system but short of keeping it running all night it would probably take a couple of hours to heat the system up in the morning. I would like to include an additional system (Economy 7 electric boiler/ground source/airsource etc) to provide the early morning heating.

Can anyone help with comparative installation and running costs for such an additional system? I would really appreciate help on this....
