iphone or HTC desire

please, please, please give me some honest advice.

For the past 4 weeks I have been trying to decide which phone to get. Hopefully the following information will give you an idea of what you want.

Firstly I have Itouch which I love I was looking at the 3GS as I dont believe the extras on the 4 would be of benefit to me. I think the only reason that I am attracted to iphone is because I know how it works. My husband already has one so I know about the poor battery life.

I looked at the HTC desire, Sony Erricson X10 and Samsung Wave. Never really been a fan of Samsung so would need to be really persuaded. I think the HTC looked better than the X10.

Can anyone please give some advice from experience with these phones as it appears that the like of phone4you will push you towards what they have a lot of stock of and not what you actually need.

Thanks

You are already used to the Apple way so go with the iphone. Or get a mifi dongle and turn your touch into an iphone. (assumes the touch has a microphone)

mi fi is a dongle that presents wi fi to devices , eg some apps on my handset only work via a wi fi connection, so when away from home I can for isntance use catch up tv or yamgo to watch tv on my mobile or listen to internet radio.

I don't know if you have voice input on the itouch. Even if you did have that and bought the MiFi device from three network, you will only be able to do VOIP calls through a client like Skype or other such software plus pay extra for data use on MiFi plus extra for voip calls via Skype etc. Probably easier to get the desire as a phone since you already have the itouch as a music player. You don't need a MiFi for accessing internet via the itouch. You can tether the itouch wirelessly by downloading apps from CNET website for wireless tethering on android phones. Then on a car journey you could use yourphone as satnav or phone while another person could use the itouch by wireless tethering to also access the net. I haven't actually tried this option but do know this option exists. If time permits I can try tethering my archos 605 WiFi media player wirelessly and check out this option, but my wife has made a long to do list already for me for the weekend, so might not have the time for checking this out this weekend. If I try and it works then will post it here. I don't need the wireless tethering as have got 2 desires now at home for browsing while traveling, making my old archos redundant, so probably give it to my child to playaround with as a picture screen as she likes scrolling through things on my desire but am scared to give it to her on her own as she might break it as she is only about 21months old.

Best to check out the desire with friends or in a shop then make the decision. See some videos of what the desire can do on http://www.geekanoids.co.uk/reviews/tag/htc or other videos on YouTube before going to a shop to check it out.

Or also consider the Samsung galaxy s which has some better specs than the desire "on paper ", but can't comment on that till actual reviews compare it and the desire on YouTube. The Samsung wave has got poor review compared to the desire or even the iPhone 3gs.

Oh the desire doesn't have a great battery life either depending on how you use the phone, neither can it connect to the internet using proxy settings

  • Nice ideas on the tethering bubblesmoney, thanks.

7062, I have the Desire and can't speak for the other phones, but found the UI superb and dead easy to get to grips with, so I wouldn't worry about it being unfamiliar.

My friends that have iPhone users seem to look on it with envy, but the only tangible reason I can immediately recall that they say sets it apart are the UI speed and call quality (after all, it is meant to be a phone). It also seems remarkably quick at finding/connecting to wifi networks.

Mine's been rock solid so far.

The desire can't use proxy settings for WiFi connections at university or at work unless you root it. While the iPhone and Nokia etc can out of the box. So if this proxy based WiFi connection is vital for you then the desire is not for you unless you root the phone and void the warranty. If you use WiFi without proxy settings then it should be ok. Also heard it like other HTC phones like the hero has some issues with wireless N type of routers as per quite a few posts online. It is a good phone but Like anything else has some bad points but which I can live with. See techradar and CNET UK reviews of the phone.
