    Hi Harperk,

I would suggest buying an IDE hard drive caddy, and just copying the files from the old hard drive to your new computer. This will however require you to take the old computer apart, but given the information you've supplied so far, i'm not sure what other way you could do this.

If it's Windows 98SE then USB should work - have you got a pendrive you can try in there ?

In some retailers' sites, these caddies are referred to as Hard Drive Enclosures, but I endorse the method pretty much as described above.

    Buy Enclosure
Remove HDD from 98 Desktop and place in enclosure
Connect enclosure to other Desktop via USB
    Copy files.
Replace HDD in 98 desktop if still required there.

I'd advise against using an enclosure as that can require reformating etc of the drive before it can be accessed (esp if it was a different OS)

I'd suggest removing the HDD from the old PC and hooking it up as an internal drive on the new PC and copying accross that way -you might not even need to take it out of the old one if the cables reach when the cases are placed next to each other

!!! IMPORTANT disconnect it completly from the Win98 PC its installed in and keep that one switched off/unplugged throughout. Basically power it and connect the data cable from the new PC only, if you try to power it from one PC and connect it to another thats a recipe to blow something expensive on the motherboard

For a temporary measure, point a good quality phone cam at the old computer and make a video. You might find the quality more acceptable than expected!

As windows 98 uses fat/fat32 file system, any new version of windows wouldn't have any problem seeing it in an enclosure, surely?

Also, unless the OP's newer computer is quite old, it may not even have the requisite IDE slot. Can we get some clarification of what drive type the new computer has?

That method also might invalidate any warranty depending on age of new machine

Would someone mind posting some pics of IDE and SATA connectors for OP's benefit?
