Mobile data usage - is 500MB enough?

Hello,
I am about to take the leap and purchase the new iphone 4 on contract when it comes out (so excited).
The problem is I am getting different information from different sales people at Voda, O2 and Orange in terms of how much data usage I might need?
I was originally going to go with O2 as this as unlimited data, but now it has been reduced to 500MB and I'm unsure whether that will be enough.
What experiences do people have with how much mobile data usage they use on a monthly basis?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks folks!!

I'm only but one voice. I would say I'm a light mobile internet user who goes online while away from home ( weekend breaks and suchlike ).
This month I will use in the region of 98 MB.0 -

I am a heavy user updating some apps on the go, but also streaming television occasionally (catchuptv, Sky Sports & Eurosport) and listening to streaming radio reasonably often. I may also download a song via spotify. View the news on train etc ... I hit about 1.3GB per month.
When Spotify is able to run in the background, i would expect that my listening would be targeted towards that app. Guess I could push 2GB a month.
However, I am not "on the iPhone all the time" (perhaps my g/f might differ in opinion!), just use fairly heavy apps sometimes.
p.s. I am also on a WiFi at home & at work ...0 -

Thanks, that's very interesting. A lot different to what the sales assistants say in the shop!!0 -
Get sim only 30 day contract with o2 and you still get unlimited data, once iphone 4 is out you will see that go from the tariff tables.Kind Regards

My FUP with Orange gives me 1 gig.
When at home I have the phone connected to the wifi, last month I used just over 400 mb on the wifi and just under 30 mb on 3G
Mine is set up for email, I also do a lot of browsing, but most of the downloading of apps is done when I am on the wifi.0 -

Unfortunately I am not in the position to be able fork out for a payasyou go phone, even though I realise this is the best option. Thanks anyway!0 -
I get unlimited internet with 3 (although its actually capped at 1GB ??) and i've got a blackberry. I can't actually tell how much ive used, but 2 months out of the 10 i've had the phone, they have texted me to say i have reached my limit.
I tend to mostly use mine for browsing the odd site, emails and facebook and download some music, apps etc and would not consider myself a heavy user.0 -
bottom line is mate if ur gonna be using if for any type of streaming (tvcatchup, sky sports app, radio etc..) on 3G then basically forget get about it 500MB is NOT gonna get u very far it will eat that allowance up very quickly.0

I asked a similar question on another forum and in the end decided that I would go for a package with at least 1GB - should give some flexibility for the next 12 to 18 months - who knows what we'll be using our smartphones for by then?!0
