If I see a collector with a tin, I put money in it on principle just because they're not trying to sign me up to a direct debit.

If I see a collector shake a tin - or ask for change - I refuse to put money in on principle, because that constitutes begging and is against the law.

Me and a friend were in Liverpool on a break last week and walking through the town centre. We knew we were going to get stopped by one. So I acted completely uninterested as the guy went through his speech about chickens and my friend looked on interested. Let him talk away for about ten minutes and then when he mentioned 'We don't take any cash, just your bank details for a DD' I said no chance and my friend finally started speaking and said 'I'm Irish, and don't have the bank account and even if I did, I give to a charity I choose and not one you choose for me'. He quickly turned away. We were pleased to waste as much of his time as he had ours!

I can honestly say this is one of the reasons I hate coming across to england, it seems wherever you go there is some moron rattling a tin in your face or wanting to ask you questions or get you to sign something. Isn't it about time something was done about this, it was successfully done here, chuggers are banned from the streets no exceptions, other charities must book the days they wish to collect (5 maximum) for the year in January and if any are seen rattling the tin the whole collection can be stopped.

A chugger actually shouted at me, after I had said a polite, 'not interested', 'So you don't care about the starving children then do you?' To which I replied 'Nope' Because,of course, that being shouted at me, was going to make me turn around and sign up (wishes we still had the rolling eyes smilie here)

You do realise that these people are only trying to do their jobs. All you've got to do is say "No thanks" or "I haven't got time"

But a significant proportion of these chuggers don't take a simple polite 'No thanks' as an answer, do they???
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"

So many people dislike them, in fact I can't imagine anyone ever signing up to them, so why do charities enlist them.

Its a waste of any charities money & would stop me ever donating to them as they waste their resouces instead of helping whatever cause they are susposed to:mad:

I once read an article that when you agree to [strike]sign your life away[/strike] sign up for a direct debit the company that signs you up supposedly takes 3 years worth of payments before the charity see's any cash

That will be to pay for the chuggers

    Indeed it's big business.

And is it transparent? No. Give £1 to a big charity and they'll tell you what % goes on admin costs and what percentage goes on good causes. Give £1 to a chugger and you'll never know without delving deep.

Charities justify chuggers on the basis that some income is better than none. What they don't realise is that in commercialising themselves in this manner, they are peeing off a mighty sector of the public.
