Ipad virus protection.

Options
I expect to take delivery of my shiny new Ipad any time now and I am concerned about virus protection. I have been told that this is not a problem with this machine but I am not convinced. Could someone advise me please.

Enjoy, not heard of any exploits yet. Jobs wont let Flash near it. There is a reset/restore button. What colour did you get ?
  • Thanks for the help guys, seems like I can use it without worrying. I dont recall having an option to choose the colour, I thought they were all the same colour. They are supposed to be shipping tomorrow so I shouldnt have too long to wait.

It'll be a while before anyone releases a virus that can get to it, unless you're dumbass enough to jailbreak that thing

But only a dumbass would say such a thing, jailbreaking does not open up your ipad/touch/phone up to any exploits, all it does is all you to put 3rd party apps on, it is up to you to ensure they are from a trusted source.

Seconded, my touch has been jailbroken for ages with no issues whatsoever, if you change your mind after a while then the device can be reset via itunes anyway! :)

So what about the worm that attacked jailbroken iPhones with the default SSH password?

If people are stupid enough not to change default passwords then you cannot protect against that, it's like saying you should stick with the default password on your router etc, only a fool would do that. Real stupidity will beat artificial intelligence every time. As I said the jailbreak did not open that up, stupidity did, remember the jailbreak is only possible because it exploits a security failure by apple. It is also worth noting that that worm was designed to point out to those stupid enough not to change default passwords what could happen.

Those worms only affected iPhones that were jailbroken and had not had the default SSH password changed. So, yes jailbreaking the phones did open it up. The orginal worm was designed to point out the ssecurity flaw. The second one actually allowed data to be stolen and root passwords to be changed. It was a serious attack.

Yes you have to be dumb to leave default passwords in place but phones that weren't jailbroken were not affected.

As I stated, jailbreaking only occurs by exploiting an existing built in security flaw, therefore by jailbreaking you then block that exploit and if done correctly make the unit even more secure. Every phone, pc, wireless device made has an exploit without exception, it is up to the user to eliminate this often done by using common sense. Also as I said that worm was only a serious attack on those stupid enough to leave the door open with a default password, the jailbreak like the inbuilt apple back door only made it possible in certain circumstances but it was individual human error allowed it to happen, would you buy a digital lock for your house with a known default code of 1234 and then fit it to your front door without changing the code? No you wouldn't.
