Travelling around Australia

Hi, im after a bit of help.
Me and the GF are considering going over to Australia for 9-12 months, and travelling around and seeing the sites etc.
Does anyone have any tips on how to go about it?
i.e. buying/hiring a campervan cheaper than hotels?
where to get cheap flights from?
and maybe a employment agency over their that could give us temporary work in different cities?

Any help would be really appreciated
cheers

evisitor allows stays of up to 3 months, so ensure you have the correct visa.

    Hiya,

I'm off to Aus myself in August on a years working Visa (costs about £200) which allows you to stay there for up to 12months, also allows you to work but not with the same company for more than 6 months.

You have to be under 30 for this type of visa (now or never for me...next year will be too late!).

I recently got back from a holiday in Aus and loved it so much I've decided to give it a go.

Where are you planning to travel to? I'm in the process of booking my flights, not cheap! And apparently its wise to have a bank account sorted out there before you go...this website is great for info, for backpacking and general stuff in Aus...

    enjoy!

    Hi,

    try googling some of these:

Greyhound buses - If you take overnight trips you can sleep on the bus and save on hostel fees (take earplugs though as they have videos on!)

    Virgin Blue for cheap flights

Train can also be surprisingly cheap (only used it on the east coast - so not sure about elsewhere)

Stay in hostels when needed, not hotels. They are loads cheaper and the nicer ones are no different to a good quality budget hotel. Almost all the hostels have websites, and all of Oz is on Google street view, so it's easy to research the areas they are in and how good they are.

Get a copy of the Lonely Planet Australia guide. It will be the best £15 you will spend - It has all the details on travel, hostels, visas, bank accounts ect etc etc.

Look at Tigerairways.com for cheap flights around Oz. Then start saving.
Oz is expensive compared to many destinations.
Organised activities can cost an arm and two legs. We're off to Oz again this winter with Air Asia via Kuala Lumpur, less than £395 return all in but their best deals have gone for this year 'I think'. Hostels can work out more expensive than some hotels for the odd night, but they are cheaper for longer stays.
For longer stays buying a camper van is likely to be cheaper than renting, if you know about vehicles that is a BIG help. Fuel prices go up at weekends so fill up maybe Thursday lunch-time, but it's cheaper than UK (Big surprise there then!)
1'st job get an up to date copy of THE ROUGH GUIDE to OZ.

    Stansted-KL £85
    KL to Melboune return £135
    KL to Stanstead £175

All including prices include bags, taxes, charges, meals (but no movie)

Bobthe Saver - did you prebook your meals and that is why they are included in the price? I was looking at flights to Perth via KL on Air Asia - £35 to Perth from KL? gotta love that! But the prices didn't include meals - they were an additional few pounds - along with comforts - ie pillow, blanket etc.....but for the extra £20 for the odds and ends for the flight - I certainly don't have a problem with it!

Anybody going to Australia - don't do the normal thing and miss out on Western Australia - too many people do that :(

Yes I do pre-book meals on Air Asia X, don't ever bother with Air Asia (non X) short-haul flights. Meals are much like any other airline grub. They're only a couple of quid or so. I never bother with blankets or all that cr*p, if I'm tired I sleep if I'm not I don't - full stop.

The prices I paid and quoted are 'all inclusive'. All taxes, charges, card fees, meals, bags (15Kg - mine are usually 8kg but have liquids, etc etc so I check them in long-haul).

Air Asia's best deals for (our) winter usually come up May/June but they can pop-up during the year. Saw Stansted-KL one way £150 ish in Feb I think it was.

PS. Did KL Perth last winter, watch out for the very overpriced bus into town from the International terminal, good service but over priced. Cheap local bus from domestic
terminal but it's miles away and to use the transfer bus between terminals they say you need an onward ticket. (Any advice to avoid this appreciated)

    Thanks for all the advice.

Bob the saver - how did you get the flights so cheap?
We are looking at going from October til July/August, when would be the best time to look at booking? it may be next year that we go, depending on prices
and also, is it possible! to buy an 'open ticket' in case we decide to stay abit longer?
    Cheers

I signed up for the Air Asia 'red alerts' to get prior notice then sat at the computer and kept trying when the flights were released, no rocket science, just boring. They don't do open tickets but you can book one way.

sorry - have never had to use other transport when flying into Perth - as my family is all there, so it's a ride home to Morley or Bunbury in the comfort of a family car - depending on who I'm staying with first!
