Is my water bill too high?

Options
I've recently moved out of a flat, which a friend and I were living in for 6 months. When we moved out, the estate agent took a water reading and said that it was 26 cubic metres for the 6 month period. We'd already paid £50 after 4 months of living there, but now we've received another bill, for £70. The water company said that this was correct and that the total bill was £120 - but this seems really high to me, for a reading of 26. Am I right in thinking this, or does the bill seem about right?

  • Hi,
To my conscience, your water bill is moderate...

To cut your hefty utility bills, it's better to switch on to friendly green homes as they are more energy-efficient and eco-friendly..

The average consumption in UK is 60 cubic metres per person per year. So for 2 people for 6 months 60 cubic metres would be average, thus you have used 50% of average consumption.

You have to pay standing charges for water and sewerage and that can vary depending where you live, as can the charge per cubic metre.

That said £120 for 26 cubic metres is highish(unless you live in SW England) In the Severn Trent area(Midlands) it would be about £80

Is the bill showing a reading of 26?

FWIW, you should ALWAYS take your own readings when
    • you move into a property
    • you move out of a property
    • the meter is changed [both old and new]
and you should keep your readings for 6 years - plus you should compare the meter readings on all bills with the meter itself. This applies to gas and electricity too.
