OP, if you do need to arrange an independent report you should contact FIRA. The retailer may already be part of the Furniture Ombudsman scheme.

How rude! Are you sure that you know what you are talking about? Unless you have evidence that this was fair wear and tear or that it was due to damage by the customer in what way would it demonstrate that was so?

I would suggest that if the item can be shown to have been faulty at time of purchase (sofa shouldn't need repairing after 7 months) then the purchaser has a legal right to claim reasonable compensation for upto 6 years (5 in Scotland)
