To get to this low a level something must have gone badly wrong.
    Either

You never checked the oil or had the car serviced.
    .

That gets my vote. Many people seriously think the oil warning light is there to tell them to put more oil into it.

To the OP, you've taken 1,000's of miles off the engine with excessive wear and may well have shafted it. I'd be listening out for rumbling and knocking noises when accelerating if I were you.

My dads Fiesta uses a little bit of oil and in 2007 the light came on. Its done 27,000 miles since then and its still running strong. Oil top ups happen once a month now though and not just at the oil change.

The oil warning light is not an oil level indication light, its a low oil preasure warning light. One of the causes can be low oil but a warn engine would also cause the same issue. To get this low of oil its either a leak (should be easy to spot), a warn engine or poor maintance.

Just to add that most engine oil warning lights are set at such a low pressure that by the time they come on, damage has already been done.

As for oil top ups once a month, you should be checking it once a week. As a wagon driver, I was expected to check the oil once a day. I was even expected to check it if I was on night shift and the day shift driver had just parked it up.
  • A mondeo 1.8 2004 diesel model would take exactly 4.5 ltr of oil along with a oil filter change .....
I have been changing the oil through my ford service and never has been less than that ...
That will take the oil level between the min and max level excatly

I usually top up 250ml more than 4.5 ltr and than keep on checking ..
I dont ever have to top up again in the whole year

these are accurate figures you can be sure

I think this thread shows why buying a used car is so risky these days.

My neighbour asked me to do an oil change on his Rav4, as he hadn't done one for the three years he has owned it.

I asked if the level was OK, he said he checked it today and it was fine.

Started to drain the oil and about a litre and a half came out.

When I asked him to show me how he checked the oil level he was checking the autobox dipstick, he didn't realise that the letters AT where significant.

I was amazed at how long this car lasted without much oil.

They certainly built Toyotas to last back in the '90s

OP, if the dipstick indicates how much oil is in the sump, and it is dry after adding a litre, do you really need to ask why, please add some more oil before you do any more damage to your engine.

I don't think there's anything wrong buying a used car

It's the owners of the cars that generally cause the vehicle problems

Erm, that is what I just said.

The thread about not knowing why an oil light is flashing and the dipstick is dry after adding a litre, is showing that it is risky buying a used car these days........because owners take reliability for granted, not that cars use too much oil.

    Apologies

    No, worries Rossy.

I thought my point was clearer than perhaps it was.
  • OP. if you're not winding us up, and your car hasn't got a serious oil leak, you're probably going to need a new engine soon.
