Laminte Floor Laying Costs-Guidance needed.

Hi,

We have 50 m2 of 9mm wood effect laminate to lay and have just recieved a quote of £1500 (2 men @ approx £185 a day each for 4 days) to lay it. Now the quote was from someone who we know and who will do a good job however I have no idea what this kind of job costs. We have already removed the old laminate and carpet and even taken off skirting boards so new ones can be place on top of the flooring easily. The above quote doesnt include fitting new skirting.

If there is anyone out there who has experience of paying for this kind of work or even someone who does this type of work (..well!) and would like to provide a rough quote for comparison then I'd appreciate your comments. The flooring is to be layed through 4 rooms (living, kitchen, dining, utility) on concrete asphelt floor and we live in Leeds.

Thanks

  • 2 men for 4 days ! ! ?

    They`re having a laff .

It`ll take 1 time served joiner less than a day to lay this (including skirting being replaced) and should cost no more than £200 . If they`re busy and don`t want to do the job they may quote as high as £10 per m2

  • Thanks for the reply Hairybuilder...so based on your figures even if they really didnt want the job and charged £10 per sq metre it would still only come to £500. Crikey they must REALLY not want the job then as they've quoted us treble that! Think I need to get a quote for comparison, will have to get the feelers out for a good joiner....

we were quoted at £10 sq metre at our local shop, which is nearly treble what they charge for carpet fitting.
that is their standard charge, as we have asked at various times.
    decided to do it myself..
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

We were quoted £350 to fit 25sqm. I thought that was reasonable - until I read the answers on this thread that is! Mind you it is still half of what the OP was quoted
  • Only 3 or 4 years ago my Bro and I used to supply and fit laminate flooring for £10 per m2 all inclusive !
Bought a good quality flooring and underlay in bulk and we still made a decent profit .
Only did the one load though as it was sooo sore on our knees crawling about fitting it for days on end
    LOL
    :D

Nowadays I know timeserved joiners still only charge £10 per sq metre but this is only to lay the floor

  • yep....they are havin a giraffe!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 men 4 days!...they must only work 3 hours a day with an hour lunch!
    £900 towards next holiday...ta very much Mr T x
  • I've just fitted 24m2 of engineered wood for the first time ever. It took me a day all by myself. 2 experienced people should be able to do your job in a day easily. I think it is a relatively unskilled job that does not require any qualifications, regulations etc. It is a DIY type job that will be simply explained in DIY shop leaflets such as wickes etc.
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

I work in flooring so the guys who you know probably think they will get the job anyway. Yep they are having a GIRAFFE s o to speak, £10 mtr is the going rate on a job as big as yours i would haggle to £7. £350.. a day and a half tops for ONE BLOKE...Or BLOKESS.(not wishing to be sexist)
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!

Wow that does seem high. We're buying our first house and I want some floors done in laminate as we've got a toddler who likes to spill things and the OH has asthma. Some friends of ours had their living room and hallway done and it cost them £700 for everything (from Allied Carpets) and I can remember thinking that sounds expensive but I guess it's not really. I'll have to re-think my budget!
  • also i know allied carpets charge £20m2 to fit solid wood flooring if that helps!
