i want sky plus?

my mum and dad have normal sky and sky plus with hd in two seperate rooms, i would like to have sky plus in my room, my dad is paying about £77 a month for the two boxes. We looked on the sky website earlier about it but it would cost £97 a month instead of £77 and they want an up front payment of £199...anyone have any ideas how i could get it any cheaper? or if its worth the time phoning sky to see if they will bargain with us?
help is much appreciated!! :D

Problem is you already have 1 or 2 boxes from Sky which were subserdised at a reduced rate,so that is why Sky want £199 off you as you're not entitled to any more.I'm reading you already have 1 Sky+ HD & a normal Sky box,so three of your four feeds on the LNB are in use,so you'll need to get an Octo (8 port) LNB fitted to the dish.
Sky wont bargain with you over the extra £20 as it is for the HD fee & the subsription for the box.If you want a box cheaper, best bet would be one from E-Bay or similar.

we only have one hd box though..my mum uses just normal sky - not plus or hd, but my dad has sky hd and plus. I'm looking for a way to see if i can get a cheaper box..to be honest im not wanting to pay 199 for it, thought maybe they could get it cheaper for me seeing we already have one normal sky box and one hd and plus package. If i did use ebay what would i be looking for? do i need just the box then phone them for installation and package?

Doubtful you'll get it cheaper. As I said you've already had a susidised box & it's highly unlikely Sky'll give you one cheaper than £199.
If you were to get one from E-Bay,you'd need a Octo LNB & Sky HD box,I'd ring Sky after you'd bought it off E-Bay & see how much they'd charge to install the box.If you go that route, tell them you'd need an Octo LNB & phone line running.

Alternativly, you could see if they'd start up a second account in your name but then it's be around £28 a month but you'd get the box free.I think they can do a no-phoneline install still for one off £25.
But as to the charge for HD & Multiroom (the extra £20) they wont budge on that.

As has been said your household has already had a substidised box so you are not entitled to another. However, the extra per month looks wrong. You only want Sky+ not SkyHD so you should only pay £10 per month extra for multiroom. I think the confuson is because Sky only supply HD boxes now and not the regular plus box however that does not mean you need to take the HD pack for the box, especially if its not being substidised.

Another option is get 2nd hand Sky+ box from ebay and install it yourself (by buying an Octo LNB and cable) or contact a local installer. Sky will not install equipment not purchased from them. You would then need to contact Sky to obtain a new multiroom card.
  • Hi all,

I am a complete novice on these forums and have a few questions I hope a member of the forums or a sky rep can answer.

I've recently placed an order for sky multiroom (installation 22/06). Including in the order is a free sky + box and standard box. A relative of mine has an additional sky+ box that they are willing to give as they no longer use. I would like to therefore have the sky+ facility in both rooms. From doing some research, I understand that two cables are needed for sky + from the LNB to the receiver.

Will the engineer connect both rooms for sky+ at my request? and also...

Can I call sky to "marry" my 2nd card for sky+ using a box provided by my relative?

If anyone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Doubtful, the installer will only install what's on his job sheet. He's timed on it so to do what you ask is taking out of his job timings.Sky installers get a certain amount of work each day dependent on the job timings.Plus he wont have time to do it & anyway,he does'nt get paid for installing extra equipment so why should he do it for free?He may if you bung him a few quid tho.
He may leave you extra cable so you can do it yourself if you ask him.As to your second question, they should do.
  • Many thanks for your reply.

I will haggle with the engineer to see if he can do it :). I notice that we have a dish connected to our property from previous tennants but it looks quite old? Maybe a new dish is needed if I wanted to have sky+ x 2 (four cables). I will have a multi-room subscription and all packages (including sports a movies) so hopefully sky have no problem marrying the card to the new box if the engineer will fit the additional cable, they'll be getting around £60 Pm from me :(

I'm sure if he has enough time and doesn't have to mess about too much then he will do it for a drink.
Note that inflation has risen over the years and £5 is not a drink, a drink starts at £20 these days ;)

You can call them yourself to have the card paired without a problem, although they will want the second box plugged in to a working telephone line and you will have to pay the extra for the recording facility to be enabled (as well as whatever package you want the second box to receive).
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.
  • Thanks,

I'm unsure what you mean when you say that I will have to pay extra for what package I want the second box to receive. I have ordered a multi room subscription so surely this would fall under this category?

How much extra will they want to have the benefit of recording using the sky+ box? I'm not using HD. I was under the impression that as long as I had the sky+ for recording the charge per month would be the same as standard?

Thanks again for replying and sheding some light on this for me :)

    Cheers

Say for example, your package for a normal Sky+ box with HD is £28 per month & you then add multiroom, then your monthly subscription increases to £38 a month. This extra £10 is a subsadised subscription for the second box. The's no charge for the recording bit if you subscribe to Sky.
HOWEVER you must keep the all the Sky boxes connected to the phoneline for as long as you have the Multiroom active or Sky will send you some 'nice' letters, after that, the £10 subscription for the second box increases to full price (£18,remember it's the subscription less the £10 HD charge as the second box is'nt HD)
