How reliable are mobile providers 3G coverage maps?

I want to get a HTC desire and have been to few different shops, Orange said they had no 3g coverage at my address, ditto Vodaphone. O2 lady said she had friends in my village who had no problems.

I've double checked all their websites and all of them inc O2 say they have no 3g coverage. So are all their maps incorrect and in that case is it worth taking a risk and getting an Orange one? I can find better deals on Orange than I can on 02?

I don't have wifi so if I want to get on the net at home I need 3g coverage.

And if anyone does know of any good o2 HTC Desire deals I'd be interested. I need a deal with a good fair usage policy.

Thanks
