    Hi there,

I've worked in the Carpet Trade for over 20 years and I can assure you that Carpet Right is the most expensive Flooring Retailer and remember all their Sales Staff have a low basic and get commission on all sales….which makes them very pushy.

To give you an example on top of the Standard fitting charge (paid to the fitter cash, with no Guarantee) they charge £35.00 for delivery even though they're fitting it anyway and an extra £35.00 surcharge for Hall, Stairs and Landings.

All their accessories, underlay and gripper etc are very expensive, on average you will pay twice the price of an Independent Retailer on a like for like basis.

Not all 80/20 carpets are the same, they're graded on weight, quality of the wool, its gauge and finish. Although hardwearing they're very venerable to staining, a good quality 100% Polypropylene Carpet would be my preference especially for family use. They’re generally cheaper, you can bleach clean them and in most cases will wear as good as an 80/20 (providing it's a decent quality).

Whichever you choose the best advice I can give you is to buy a short and compact pile, if you want it to feel luxurious buy the best underlay you can afford. This should reduce shading, flattening of the pile, will improve the wear and will give you the spongy feeling most consumers want.

    Hope this is helpful

  • Hiya.

Thanks again for replies. I have been out with a plan today, I managed to get a 80/20 40 ounze carpet for 2 flights of stairs both landings and my bedroom for £12.50 sq mtr, was already on offer then I knocked him down to the 12.50! Get me !! So is working out including fitting at £1,000 and my master bedroom is big.

I've just put in a huge order to Tradepriced.co.uk to include all my door bars, grippers, underlay - 9mm cloud 9, laminate underlay, tape stuff. All under £300 for the whole house.

Getting vinal for the bathrooms and the man in Allied Carpets said if we give the fitters a bit of beer money they will fit all the underlay and vinal for us.

Was really happy with the guy in the shop, not pushy, not rude, didn't seem just out for his commission, he was the one that suggessted giving them extra for the laying.

Feels like a weight off my mind!

My lovely OH has agreed to fitting lovely laminate that we bought for £9.99 sqr mtr which has great reviews online.

All in all a good outcome to a very stressful week. Thanks for all your replies and help. Now I can get back to having Happy Days !!!
  • For a bit of inside info - just over a year ago, the minimum fit charge for vinyl at Allied was £45 - the fitter got £25 (which to be fair after VAT and other costs isn't too bad) so that is roughly what you should be looking at per room to pay the fitter for the vinyl. That of course assumes the floor is flat enough for vinyl in the first place, which if it had vinyl down already it should be - can't just bung it on top of ceramic tiles though!
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%
