Selling jacket - ebay won't let me put correct postage costs

I want to sell a jacket that is quite heavy and also an expensive brand, however, ebay will not let me enter the postage costs at more than £4.00. I just weighed the jacket and to send it special delivery, will cost £6.70 (+ packaging), so around £7.50 altogether. How do I get around ebays p&p price policy? Obviously don't want to pay more out of my own pocket. I need to send it by a secure service as it is quite an expensive make and I don't want to risk it "getting lost" in the post.

Thanks.

Add the difference to your start price. Certain categories have capped postsage due to sellers charging silly postage

I noticed quite a lot of sellers put their postage as "freight" and then put the postage in the listing wording. Can I do that?

You can do that but only if you actually use a freight service and not many jackets actually need a pallet to send them. You can get reported for doing that and it wont help any feedback.

Your better off adhering to the rules and adding any difference onto your start price as thats the better option

I will probably do that but it will eat into any profit I make which is a bit annoying. Might just list it on Gumtree and be done with it (or car boot sale it).

You should get the same profit if you add listing fees and postage minus the £4 into your start price. And you'll also get smashing stars for posting so cheaply too.

Interesting bob. A glitch on ebay a couple of months ago had me on the phone to them. I was trying to list an identical item to another seller, but could not charge the same postage. The ebay help line told me it was a glitch, and one way round it was to list postage as freight.
  • I have come accross this problem a few times. I've just listed a very expensive dress and will only post special delivery, I have listed this as a second postage option and it allowed me to charge £7. I have written in my listing that buyers are required to choose this option.

Yes that's the 'lets tell the punter anything we like to get him off the phone' form of customer services.

If you browse the community boards on a regular basis you will see what happens to sellers who are daft enough to regularly try the 'freight' option whilst using RM.

Good luck enforcing that. Your buyer would be well within their rights to pay the cheapest cost, and you'll have to post it whichever option they choose.
