Garage have made a warranty mistake

No but when being told your car isnt covered by a warranty ignoring the phone calls isn't a reasonable course of action.
The OP should have phoned back and resolved it.
They also should have told the garage they knew the warranty was expired. They will know better than the garage the exact dates.
the garage will know exactly when warranty is up they only have to put details in computer to get this info, this should also be on the job card.
also some manufactors offer to pay a % if it is not that long out of warranty, why should the OP question it anymore after being told it is covered on warranty when asking how much??
the garage has made a mistake unless you come to an agreement with them then they will have to cover the cost.0 -
It was a bit sneaky of you not to correct the garage when they said it would be a warranty repair, even though you knew the car was out of warranty."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

If you read the OP, you will see that he specifically asked if the unexpected and unscheduled repair would be charged.... "I specifically asked what the charge would be for the part and was told that it was covered by the warranty.".... Short of demanding that they take his money against their will, he did all that could reasonably be expected.0 -

Far from "sneaky".
He asked what it would cost, and was told it was under warranty. Many would take that to mean the garage had already ascertained it was a warranty job before phoning up and be grateful the manufacturer wasn't shirking its liability just because the warranty had just expired in the last 2 months.
When booking cars on to their system, it's reasonable to expect warranty and non warranty jobs get flagged, and if told a specific job is a warranty job, that should be the end of it.0 -
Yes but the OP knew it wasn't in warranty. He didn't 'specifically ask' if the garage was sure the warranty was still in place two weeks after it had expired because he already knew the answer. So what? Is it the OP's responsibility that they offered to do the work under warrenty? Did he in any way mislead them into believing that the warranty was still in place when the quote was given?0 -
Returning to the OP, the garage will probably send out an invoice. What you could do is return it to them, saying you cannot agree to pay the charge as this work was agreed to only on the basis that it was FOC warranty work, as confirmed by both telephone and on the original invoice for the service and repair which was paid in full.
Ask them to issue a credit note against the invoice to cancel it out.0 -

not strictly true, agreed the car was out of warranty but the OP has no way of knowing a certain part was not covered under some sort of warranty.when i worked at vauxhall they contributed to certain things even after warranty had finished they called it VCAN certain items vauxhall would pay a % this depended on what had failed.
if you specifically ask how much the part will cost fitted and they say FOC on warranty why would you question it any further? especially as it is a franchised dealer and all they need to do is enter reg number in system to find out when it was registered and as previously said the job cards at franchised dealers contain all the relevant numbers and dates.
if it was your car you would probably do the same as the OP no matter what you are saying now.0 -
Whos to say the fan hadn't failed 2 months previous and just went unnoticed?0

Who's to say there was nowt wrong with the fan, but the dealer wanted to get a bit more from the job via the warranty?0
