Non-iPhone Contract Sim on iPhone 4

I can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere on t'internet so thought I'd ask the experts on here as I'm sure there's a few other people in a similar situation :)

I upgraded 18months ago to a tarriff with unlimited data plan/x mins/x txts and got a free phone that I sold and purchased an iPhone 3GS via the Apple shop. Everything works fine apart from the no visual voicemail (boo hoo? :p).

So time has come again to upgrade, sell the upgrade phone and 3GS to fund the new iPhone 4 from the Apple shop.

Question is will I be able to use my tariff with the new iPhone bearing in mind they are capping the data usage for the iPhone tariffs.

I have ordered a micro-sim already and will transfer my phone number to that.

  • Yes you can do that. As lons you buy a sim-free iPhone 4 for Apple you can put anyone's SIM in it including the one with your current contract terms. Of course, someone in the operator will want to upgrade you to an iPhone tariff, but you do not need to do it.
This morning I had a ridiculous conversation with Vodafone (my operator) and in the end they admitted they don't have any MicroSIMs in stock except for those ready for the iPad data only plans. It took over twenty minutes to get that far, so I'd be interested to hear who you ordered your MicroSIM from and by what method (phone or web).
  • Well o2 are giving away free microsims http://freesim.o2.co.uk/sKTLPi92 however whether you can transfer your number onto it easy is another question. I didn't have any issue doing it last time when I called up to transfer to a new Sim as my old Sim was not 3G enabled.
